What does it mean to be a true ally for the Deaf community?

It means listening, learning, and understanding that it takes action to create change. Things like making sure your Deaf colleague or friend has equal access to information wherever they go. It means speaking up when you notice that something isn't accessible for Deaf people, instead of just ignoring the problem.

Tom () is a Deaf content creator who blends humour, relatability and advocacy to help hearing audiences understand Auslan and Deaf culture. We asked him to share his perspective on what it means to be a genuine ally for the deaf community.

You can read more about his thoughts and story on our blog https://hubs.ly/Q04qNDWf0

💡 Did you know that 1 in 2 people who experience loneliness say they wouldn't tell anyone?

Loneliness is a growing problem in Australia, but the shame and stigma around loneliness prevents people from getting the help they need. We sat down with Dr Anna Brooks, Chief Research Officer at Lifeline and discussed the ways loneliness often hides in plain sight, and what we can do as individuals and together to tackle this problem.

The solution starts with noticing.

This Not Alone Day we're asking Australians to notice the little things. Someone who’s a little quieter than usual. Someone who’s stopped showing up. Someone who just doesn’t quite seem like themselves. You don’t need to know what’s wrong or have the right thing to say. Sometimes, simply noticing is where connection begins.

Not Alone Day is Like Family’s annual initiative to raise awareness about the growing issue of loneliness in Australia, and to inspire people to create a more connected community where everyone feels seen, valued and less alone.

This Not Alone Day, notice when something feels a little different, because loneliness often hides in plain sight 🔍 👀

Loneliness doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes, it shows up in the smallest changes, someone who’s a little quieter than usual, who stops showing up, or who just doesn’t quite seem like themselves. This Not Alone Day, take a moment to notice. You don’t need to know what’s wrong or have the right thing to say. Sometimes, simply noticing is where connection begins.

After Mat's mum was diagnosed with Herpes Encephalitis, her brain completely reset at the age of 55. He didn't think she'd ever be the same again, but thankfully, the brain has amazing ways to repair itself 🧠

He learnt that getting his mum back to familiar environments can actually help rebuild the connections in her brain through neuroplasticity. Today, Mat's mum has had a full recovery and lives independently surrounded by friends.
