After 24 years working in education, I have met and hired a lot of people. But every now and then, you meet someone who looks you in the eye and says yes — we share a responsibility to ensure our young people are seen, supported, and that we as the adults will make the change that needs to happen.

For me, that person has been Dr Mark Williams OAM.

His impact on Life Skills GO, the contribution he shares so freely as a core member of National Check-In Week, and the mentoring and support he has offered me personally is not something I have experienced often in my career. It is rare. It is genuine. And it has meant more than I can easily put into words.
To see your tireless commitment to young people recognised in this way has brought us all the greatest joy.

There is no one more deserving of that honour.

Congratulations, Dr. Mark. Thank you for everything, that you have done and continue to do.

What if attendance support started before a child ended up on a list?

In this National Check-In Week webinar snippet, the conversation looks at the need for preventative systems that help schools understand what drives engagement before attendance becomes a concern.

Instead of waiting until absence triggers letters, warnings, or pressure on families, schools need earlier insight into what helps students feel connected, supported, and able to show up.

National Check-In Week is about moving from late reaction to earlier understanding, using student voice, wellbeing data, and whole-child insight.

Every day in a young person’s life matters.

In this National Check-In Week webinar snippet, the conversation calls for courage, curiosity, and change in how we support young people through school.

The world students are growing up in is complex, fast-moving, and filled with pressures many adults did not experience in the same way. That is why schools and systems need to stay curious, listen earlier, and create the conditions where every young person has the opportunity to thrive.

National Check-In Week is about helping adults see the whole child sooner and respond with greater care, insight, and shared responsibility.

When children talk about school, they often talk about their friends first.

In this National Check-In Week webinar snippet, the conversation reminds us that belonging and connection are deeply linked to how young people experience school.

While learning matters, students also need to feel connected, included, and part of the school community. For many young people, friendships, lunchtime moments, and peer connection shape whether school feels like a place where they belong.

National Check-In Week helps schools look beyond attendance and academics to better understand the whole child.

Student wellbeing is not the same everywhere.

Across Australia, schools are seeing different challenges, from cyberbullying and anxiety to loneliness, sleep, belonging, attendance, academic pressure, and disengagement.

That is why local insight matters.

National Check-In Week 2026 helps bring student voice and wellbeing data into focus, so schools can better understand what young people are experiencing in their own communities.

One national conversation. Local action. Systems that see the whole child sooner.

Accountability matters, but so does dignity.

In this National Check-In Week webinar snippet, the conversation reminds us that school systems and frameworks should support students without damaging the connection that makes education meaningful.

When accountability is built with care, it can guide students while still preserving trust, belonging, and respect.

Because education is not only about systems. It is about human connection.

The right support starts with the right insight.

Student wellbeing is not always visible through one signal alone. Student voice, emotional readiness, attendance, engagement, and behaviour all help schools understand what young people may be experiencing beneath the surface.

National Check-In Week 2026 is about bringing these insights together, so the right data can reach the right people at the right time.

Because when schools see the whole child sooner, support can happen sooner.

Attendance, behaviour and academic data can tell us something, but they rarely tell the
whole story on their own.

By the time concern is visible through crisis, absence or disengagement, a
young person may have already lost valuable days of learning, connection and childhood.

National Check-In Week is about building systems that see the whole child sooner.
