SIMPLE OT ACTIVITY!!

Pom poms are photocopies onto a sheet and the child uses tweezers to find, pick up and place the pom poms on the matching one on the paper.

While they’re focused on the fun of matching the pom poms they’re also practising skills that can support everyday tasks like handwriting, drawing, cutting, dressing and classroom activities.

An OT may be working on:

• hand-eye coordination
• visual scanning and attention
• controlled hand and wrist movements
• bilateral coordination
• fine motor control
• motor planning
• sustained attention and persistence

This is why OT doesn’t always look like practising the task a child is struggling with.

If handwriting is difficult, for example, simply doing more handwriting isn’t always the answer. An OT looks at the skills underneath the task, identifies where the difficulty may be coming from, and finds engaging ways to build those skills.

Sometimes therapy looks a lot like play, and that’s exactly the point.

Can you read this? 👀

It might look like another language, but these symbols actually represent speech sounds.

This is called phonetic transcription, and Speech Pathologists use it to write down exactly how someone says a word, not just the word they were trying to say.

For example, a child might try to say “spoon” but say “poon.” Phonetic transcription allows a Speech Pathologist to record that difference and look for patterns in the sounds a child may be changing or leaving out.

The symbols come from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), where different symbols represent different speech sounds.

Try sounding out the symbols in the reel. Can you work out what it says ?
(Speechies have an unfair advantage 😂)

Six months in, and officially Sensia JumpStart Program graduates. 🎓

The transition from university into clinical practice is a big one. New therapists enter the profession with knowledge, passion and potential, but becoming a confident clinician takes more than a degree. It takes time, mentoring, support and a team willing to invest in their growth.

Over the past six months, we’ve watched these therapists grow in confidence, strengthen their clinical reasoning, navigate real-world practice and, most importantly, find their own identity as individual clinicians.

We’re incredibly proud of how far they've come, and even more excited about where they go from here.

Congratulations girls, its been a pleasure having you in our team 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
