Unpopular opinion: Kids aren’t fidgeting more than we did.

Their fidgets just look different. Different tools. Same need.

Movement, sensory input and fidgeting can help children:
- Focus
- Regulate
- Learn

The biggest difference?

We don’t call it “bad behaviour” anymore.

Tell us your childhood fidget. What was the weirdest thing you used to do in class?

You know those days when you’re running late, your phone won’t stop buzzing, work is overwhelming, the traffic is terrible, you’ve skipped lunch, and then someone asks, “What’s for dinner?” and you snap?

It wasn’t the dinner question.

It was the bucket that had been filling all day.

For adults, our buckets might be filled with deadlines, financial stress, constant notifications, lack of sleep, or an endless mental load.

For children, it looks different.

It might be the scratchy school uniform, the noisy classroom, transitioning between activities, trying to sit still for long periods, navigating friendships, understanding expectations, or masking how hard everything feels.

Different experiences. Same overflowing bucket.

So when a child has a “big reaction” to something that seems small, it’s worth asking:

What has been filling their bucket today?

Because understanding what comes before the overflow changes how we respond to it.

Share this with someone who needs the reminder that behaviour is communication and don't forget to follow for more.

“But they’re just playing" - We hear this all the time.
And honestly? We understand why parents ask.

Because when adults think of learning, we often picture sitting still at a desk, completing worksheets and concentrating quietly.

But childhood doesn’t work that way. For children, play is the work.
Through swinging, building, climbing, bouncing, moving, creating and connecting, therapists are often supporting skills such as:
- Attention and concentration
- Emotional regulation
- Communication and language
- Coordination and motor skills
- Problem-solving
- Confidence and independence
- Social participation

Sometimes therapy happens at a table.
Sometimes it happens on the floor.
Sometimes it happens on a swing or a gym ball.

Because the goal isn’t to make children fit one way of learning.
The goal is to create an environment where they can thrive.

So if your child’s therapy looks like play, might be exactly what they need.

Save this for the next time someone says, “But they’re just playing.” And don't forget to follow along for more !

"Aren’t OT and Physio the same thing?”

Not quite.

Physio helps children move.
OT helps children use those movements in everyday life.

Different skillsets. Same mission: helping kids reach their full potential ❤️
