The best lemon cake we’ve ever tasted was baked at School for Life Foundation in Uganda. 🍋 It was made by Jane.

Not long ago, Jane was a student in these very classrooms, and today she works in our school bakery at Mbazzi High School, earning an income and supporting her family, right in the community that raised her.

On our recent visit, the students crowded around us, bursting to tell us how much they love the bread and how good it tastes. For many of them, fresh bread baked at their own school is something brand new, and their pride was written all over their faces.

This year’s World Food Day theme is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” At Mbazzi, that looks like flour on Jane’s hands, warm loaves on the shelves and students who can’t stop smiling. 🍞

Because food is never just food. It’s energy to learn. It’s dignity. It’s a first job, a proud smile, a future taking shape.

My face honestly hurt from smiling so much. 🧡🎨

Spending time doing art with the kids at School for Life Foundation brought out my own inner child. Creating, laughing, getting stuck in and letting them take the lead, it felt so good to just play.

I loved learning from them, following their ideas and seeing the pride they took in showing me what to do.

Quality education includes opportunities like these. Enriching the curriculum with art and creativity gives children space to express themselves, explore ideas, solve problems and build confidence, and letting them lead shows them that their ideas matter.

I came away reminded that we all need a little room for creativity and play, whatever our age.

A little paint, a lot of laughs and a very happy inner child. Consider my bucket filled. 🧡

Uganda has my heart. 🧡

What an incredible end to our week at School for Life Foundation . I’ve been blown away by how much has happened since my last visit. Seeing the changes firsthand, and what they mean for the children and their families, has brought me to tears more than once.

Watching our Senior 6 students graduate with such pride was so special. Then having Diana and Cissy join us for dinner, now studying law and accounting at university, brought it all home.

Having graduated last year and two years ago, they’re now building the futures they worked so hard for.

Sports day brought netball, football, ball games and so much laughter. I loved those moments of just being with the kids.

Visiting our farm and water project showed how the impact reaches beyond the schools and into the community. It was exciting to be at the breaking ground for our new boarding house at Mbazzi Primary was another emotional moment, thinking of the children who will soon call it home.

To share all of this with our wonderful supporters and team made it even more special. So much has grown since I was last here, and behind every change are people whose lives are changing too.

It’s hard to put the past couple of days into words. So many stories, so much laughter and quite a few tears. 🧡

We’ve visited local government schools in the communities around our School for Life schools, sat in classrooms and chatted with students. Hearing their stories while seeing the conditions they’re learning in really hit home.

At one government schools School for Life Foundation has been working alongside for the past three years, we were welcomed with singing and dancing. I was brought to tears by their warmth and gratitude, and by the pride they have in what they’ve achieved and their confidence to keep moving forward.

Then Katuuso… wow. Seeing the boarding houses where children now have a safe place to sleep, rest and feel at home was so special. And the bakery that’s been established this year is incredible. It means so much to be a small part of all this.
There have been lovely moments just being together, too. Art with the little ones and tie-dye with the S4 students, who very happily showed me how it’s done! 😂

The dancing, the singing, the laughing and the conversations in between. I feel so lucky to be here.

Our first day back at the School for Life Foundation schools in Uganda, and it felt so good to reconnect with the team here. 🧡

After driving through the hustle and bustle of Kampala and out into the rural Mpigi District, we arrived at Katuuso Primary. Head students Christine, Peace and John showed us around, sharing their school with such pride. It was wonderful to see Joseph again, and really special to watch Zo experience the schools for the first time and see the smiles and laughter on the children’s faces. 📚

I also met a young girl named Tamara, whose smile lit up the room. That was a lovely little moment to share. 😊

We visited the new bakery and even sampled some of the bread! It’s an incredible opportunity for students to learn practical skills, while helping the school work towards sustainably feeding its students. 🍞

I can’t wait to bring some of our supporters here over the next few days, for some it will be their first time visiting and for others it will be so great for them to see the impact over the past few years.

I’ve had the privilege of spending the week before our School for Life Foundation Travel4Good trip exploring a little more of East Africa with my friend Kim Sharing these experiences with her has made the week even more special.

We crossed the Rwanda - Uganda boarder by 4WD and headed into mountains of southwestern Uganda

We climbed steep slopes to see the Golden Monkeys. It took so much more effort and elevation to reach them than I had thought and then there they were, moving through the forest with their babies, such an awesome experience.

The next day was one of those bucket list items I’ll never forget, trekking deep into the ancient forest of Bwindi we found our gorilla family. I’ll never forget the silverback appearing from behind the bushes, only metres in front of us…. My heart stopped for a moment in time hardly believing what i’d just seen.

Being there made me think about the work it takes to protect these places.

Trekking supports conservation and the communities living alongside the parks. It means a lot to know our visit plays a part in that.

One of my special memories of the day was meeting Phyllis, who I’ve come to think of as “fearless”. She had walked 2 hours in hope of a porters job which she only had the opportunity of doing once a month… I am so happy to have been able to support her. We spoke about the struggles we’ve each faced in life and although our circumstances are very different, we found so much in common as women, including the strength it takes to keep going. We’re also both mothers of twins. In Luganda, that makes us both Nnalongo. 🙂

Tomorrow, our Travel4Good trip begins at the School for Life schools. I’m so excited to be sharing this next part of the journey with our supporters, and spending time with the students, staff and community who make the work possible.

I came home from last week’s Philanthropy Australia Conference with a very full notebook, and an even fuller mind!

This year’s theme, Mobilising Generosity, Shaping the Future, came through in so many powerful ways. It was a reminder that philanthropy isn’t only about giving, it’s about listening to communities, sharing power, collaborating differently and using our collective resources and influence to help create a more equitable future.

There were so many thought-provoking conversations and incredible insights around ethical storytelling, systems change, the next generation of giving and the importance of building genuine, long-term relationships.

But one of the greatest highlights was the people. It was wonderful to reconnect with familiar faces and meet so many new people doing extraordinary things across the sector.

I feel incredibly proud to represent School for Life Foundation and to be part of a community so committed to learning from one another and creating meaningful, lasting change.

Thank you to everyone who generously shared their knowledge, challenged my thinking and took the time to connect. I’ve returned feeling inspired, energised and excited to put so much of what I learned into practice. A big thank you to everyone at Philanthropy Australia

Sitting at Sydney Airport, waiting to head to Brisbane for the Philanthropy Australia Conference ✈️

This year’s theme, “Mobilising Generosity, Shaping the Future,” feels so relevant to the work we do, bringing people together, sharing ideas and turning generosity into meaningful, lasting change.

I’m really looking forward to hearing from some incredible speakers, learning from others across the sector and connecting with both familiar and new faces.

So excited to spot Annabelle Chauncy OAM ’s new book here at the airport! 📚

I can’t wait to hear her speak at Open Ground at 11:30am on Wednesday.
