Are Weight Loss Injections Right for Everyone?

Many women ask me about GLP-1 medications and whether they are the answer to weight management.

These medications have been a game changer for some people and can be a very effective tool. However, they are not suitable for everyone, and I am careful about who I prescribe them to.

While GLP-1 medications can help with weight loss, we also know that some of that weight loss can include muscle mass. Muscle is essential for strength, mobility, balance, and maintaining independence as we age.

That's why I only prescribe these medications as part of a broader health plan. Resistance training, adequate protein intake, and regular exercise are all critical. If you're not committed to protecting your muscle mass, then a GLP-1 medication may not be the right choice.

Weight management is never one-size-fits-all. The best approach is an individualised plan that considers both your current health and your long-term wellbeing.

If you'd like to discuss your weight management options, I can help.

Your Skin Might Need More TLC

Did You Know?

Menopause can affect your skin as well as your hormones. As oestrogen levels decline, many women notice their skin becoming drier, thinner, and less elastic than before.

Keeping your skin hydrated with a good moisturising routine can help, but persistent dryness and other skin changes may be linked to menopause-related hormonal shifts.

The good news is that there are ways to support your skin health during menopause and help you feel comfortable and confident in your skin again.

MYTHBUSTER

"Menopause Is Only About Periods and Hormones"

FALSE!

Menopause is about much more than changes to your periods and hormone levels.

It can affect many aspects of your health, including your bones, heart, skin, hair, sleep, mood, memory, and overall wellbeing.

That's why long-term health considerations are just as important as managing day-to-day symptoms. Taking a whole-body approach can help support your health and quality of life during and after menopause.

Is Frozen Shoulder Related to Menopause?

Frozen shoulder is a common complaint during perimenopause and menopause. Many women notice increasing difficulty with everyday movements, such as fastening a bra, reaching behind their back, or pulling a seat belt across their body.

As oestrogen levels decline, joints and connective tissues can become less flexible and more prone to inflammation. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the shoulder.

Treatment is usually gentle and may include physiotherapy, although recovery can take up to a year or more. There is also evidence that HRT may help reduce the risk of developing frozen shoulder in some women.

If you're experiencing shoulder pain or stiffness during perimenopause or menopause, it's worth discussing your symptoms with your doctor and exploring whether hormone changes could be contributing.

Can You Have a Telehealth Appointment?

Yes โ€” many of my patients continue their menopause and hormone health care through telehealth appointments, which can be a convenient option for women who live outside Sydney or interstate.

To be eligible for a Medicare rebate for telehealth consultations, you must have attended at least one face-to-face appointment with me within the previous 12 months. After that, many follow-up appointments can be completed via telehealth.

If you're unsure whether telehealth is suitable for you or would like to discuss your options, I can help.
