There’s a reason I called it Mosaic. 🦋

When I started Mosaic in 2019, I wanted the name to represent the way I saw the children and families we support.

A mosaic is made from lots of individual pieces, all different in their shape, colour and character. Each piece is unique on its own, but when they’re thoughtfully brought together, they can create something beautiful.

That became the idea behind Mosaic, and eventually, the little pieces that make up the butterfly wings in our logo.

Our children are not pieces that need to be changed to fit. They each bring their own strengths, interests, personalities and ways of experiencing the world. Around them are families, therapists, educators, clinicians and communities, each contributing something different.

Our job is to recognise those individual pieces, support them, and help bring the pieces together.

Seven years later, it still feels like the perfect name for us. 🦋

Sometimes, knowing a skill and using it in everyday life are two very different things. 🌿

A child might ask for help just fine at home, but not when they’re in the classroom. They might get dressed with a prompt, but not yet initiate the steps themselves. They might know how to join another child in play, but struggle to do so without support.

Rather than assuming, “They can do it, so they should do it,” we get curious.

What’s getting in the way?

Perhaps the skill isn’t fluent yet. Maybe it hasn’t generalised across people or environments. Prompts might still be doing some of the work, or something about the environment may be making the skill harder to use.

Learning the skill is important, but it’s only the beginning.

We want the skills we teach to extend beyond the therapy space and become part of a child’s everyday life, at home, at school, in the community and with the people around them. 💚

This one came from a little real-life moment. 🩵

One of these little people is currently very much in a “why walk when I can RUN?” phase 😅 while his big sister was absolutely convinced that she could teach him to walk beside her, hold her hand and stop when they reached the road.

So, with a grown up walking closely behind them 🙋‍♀️, we let her try.

And it took some restraint not to step in.

Not to hold his other hand. Not to keep reminding him to stay close. Not to take over because it would be easier (and probably less stressful 🤣😮‍💨).

Instead, there was one really clear boundary: when we reach the road, we stop.

Everything in between gave them a little space to practise.

She held his hand and modelled what to do. He happily followed her lead. They stopped together when asked. She felt incredibly proud that she was helping him learn 🥰 and he was pretty thrilled to be doing it with her.

Such a simple reminder that supporting independence doesn’t mean removing boundaries or compromising safety.

Sometimes it means setting the boundaries that are important, staying close enough to support when needed, and giving children a little more freedom within them.

Because when we resist the urge to constantly prompt, remind or take over, we sometimes get to see just how capable they already are. 🦋

Before we teach a new skill, we ask... does this skill really matter to the child? 💜

It's easy to focus on behaviours we want to change or skills we think a child should learn. But meaningful intervention starts with a different question:
Will this make a genuine difference to this child's everyday life?

The most meaningful goals are the ones that help children:
✨ Communicate their needs.
✨ Build independence.
✨ Participate in family and community life.
✨ Have more choice and control.
✨ Be themselves, not simply appear "less different.”

At Mosaic, we believe therapy shouldn't be about changing who a child is. It's about equipping children with the skills, support and opportunities they need to participate in life in ways that are meaningful to them and their families.

When goals are meaningful, progress isn't just measured in data sheets or milestones, it's seen in everyday moments that matter. 💜

Today, Mosaic turns 7. 🩵

Seven years ago, I opened the doors to a dream I’d held since I was a young teenager. I always imagined having a clinic where I could help children reach their potential and support the people who love them most.

What I could never have imagined was what that dream would actually become.

The incredible children who would teach us just as much as we hoped to teach them. The families who would place their trust in us. The team who would pour their hearts into this work every single day. The friendships, the milestones, the challenges, and the countless little moments that have shaped Mosaic into what it is today.

Over the past seven years, we’ve celebrated incredible breakthroughs, welcomed amazing families, built an incredible team, faced challenges we never expected, and learnt more than we ever thought possible.

To every child, family, team member, referrer and supporter who has been part of our journey, truly, thank you 🙏🩵. You have shaped Mosaic into something far greater than I ever dreamed it could be, and I will never take that for granted.

The past year has brought some of the biggest challenges our industry has ever faced, but it’s also reminded us why we do what we do.

We’re still here. We’re still learning. We’re still advocating. And we’re just as committed as ever to helping children build meaningful, lifelong skills.

Happy 7th Birthday, Mosaic. Here’s to the next chapter. 🩵

When the worlds of motherhood and work collide…

Sometimes duty calls and we need to make a quick stop at the clinic after preschool.

Watching my little one happily spend a few minutes “helping” Amy on reception was a quiet reminder that the people around our children matter.

Finding people they feel safe, comfortable and cared for with is something I’ll never take for granted 🦋

As a mum of two, Clinical Director, and small business owner, no two weeks ever look quite the same.

Some days are spent providing clinical supervision, reviewing programs, collaborating with families and other professionals, and researching best practice. Other days involve payroll, budgeting, compliance, and all the behind the scenes work required to keep a small business running 🦋

Much of this work isn't visible to families, but it plays an important role in ensuring we can continue delivering safe, effective, and evidence based support to the children and families we work with.

Everything we do comes back to the same goal:
Helping children build meaningful skills, greater independence, and confidence in everyday life.

"We've tried reward charts. They don't work."
It's a phrase we hear often from parents who have genuinely tried everything they can think of to support their child.

The reality is that reward charts aren't usually ineffective because they're reward charts. More often, they're missing some key ingredients.

✔ Is the reward actually motivating?
✔ Is your child experiencing success often enough?
✔ Is the goal clear, specific, and achievable?
✔ Is everyone responding consistently?
✔ Is positive attention being given alongside the reward?

Reward systems aren't about bribing children. They're about helping children learn, practise, and repeat skills that are important for their independence and success.

When implemented thoughtfully, reward systems can be a really effective way to help children learn what to do rather than focusing on what not to do. They can support everything from getting dressed in the morning and completing homework to following routines, building independence, and developing positive behaviours that make daily life easier for the whole family.

If you've tried reward charts before and they haven't worked, it doesn't necessarily mean reward systems aren't right for your child. Sometimes a few small adjustments can make a big difference.
