🍃 There is nothing to point at. That is the part that makes it
hard to explain.
Most of what wears a person down at work never becomes an incident.
Nobody shouts. Nothing gets written down. What accumulates instead
is a run of small moments that would each sound trivial if you said
them out loud. You know that, which is why you have stopped saying
them.
📓 The body has been keeping its own record.
A nervous system is not assessing whether a situation is fair. It
is assessing whether it is safe, continuously, below the level of
thought. In an environment it cannot read clearly, it settles on
caution, because caution is the cheaper error.
Held long enough, that shows up as:
▶️ a reluctance to speak first
▶️ shortness with the people you like most
▶️ a jaw you notice at four in the afternoon 🕓
None of that is a character flaw. It is a protective response doing
what it was built to do, in a situation it was never designed for.
🌀 It also explains why the usual advice tends not to land. Take up
a hobby. Get out more. Find another job. All reasonable, and none
of it reaches a response that will travel with you into the next
environment, because it was learnt somewhere and never unlearnt.
That is the level the work happens at.
