The funeral of British nurse Edith Cavell was held in the Abbey in 1919. She is remembered for aiding the escape of allied prisoners during the First World War, her efforts resulting in her being shot at dawn by the Germans on 12th October 1915. The first part of the ceremony was held at the Abbey, and her coffin was transferred to Norwich Cathedral, where she was buried.
