What is Supported Decision Making?

Supported decision making is a process designed to ensure that individuals maintain control over their choices, from everyday decisions to major life choices. This approach focuses on enhancing a person’s decision-making abilities by empowering them to remain at the center of their own decisions.

The process includes the creation of accessible resources and opportunities, as well as the development of legal frameworks that set clear guidelines. Training is provided to supportive partners, enabling them to assist individuals in making informed choices while respecting their autonomy.

At Developmental Supports, we offer personalised support through one-on-one sessions, group programs, and family and or carer guidance. Our goal is to help individuals learn the steps of supported decision making and to develop strategies tailored to their unique needs. These client-led approaches are designed to strengthen each person’s ability to make decisions with confidence and independence.

What a beautiful day by the river fishing.
Whilst the fish didn't bite and the most we caught were leaves 😂, it did not matter. Everyone had a great day learning new skills and supporting each other.
We even built a fire to cook lunch on and roast marshmallows.

This morning there was a hive activity at skills group. Participants were busy working on current projects, starting new ones and teaching each other new skills.

There was no slowing down in the afternoon either. Michelle from Pinafores Pantry joined us for a chocolate workshop. We made some delicious rocky road and dried fruit dipped chocolate.
The day ended with a game of botchi in the 🌞

Why doesn’t Developmental Supports post photo of clients faces?

At Developmental Supports we are here to support our clients. We are truly honoured to be a part of their journeys and often are privileged with getting to witness milestones being achieved. These events, achievement and life stages are not ours, they belong to our clients, and they are theirs to share how they chose.

At times clients ask for their full photo to be taken and shared. Only then do we share the photo, we do not ask clients, they ask us and a one time ask does not mean every time.

Yesterday we were out and about at the Playford History Festival. Was interesting seeing the changes within the Playford area.
Did you know that between 1950 and 1965, there were 25,000 housing trust houses built. I wonder how many of these houses are still standing?

Using a die and some instructions, we each drew a picture of a person.
1. Draw a head
2. Draw hands
3. Draw arms
4. Draw a body
5. Draw legs
6. Draw feet

We rolled a 2 first, so we started our pictures with hands, then a head, arms, body, legs, and feet.

We then drew a body without the die, and we described how our approach changed. Some started with a head, others with feet.

This showed how our thinking needs to shift and be flexible while picturing the end result to decide on positioning, sizing, and proportions.

Check out our master pieces.
