Let's talk baby spews!

Before I had children of my own, I had no idea how such a small amount of vomit could look so enormous on clothing. Sometimes it can seem like your baby has brought up their entire feed, when in reality the volume is often much smaller than it appears.

Even just 15mL can look like a huge mess on a baby's outfit! But for a 3–4 month old baby, that's usually only a small fraction of what they would take in during a feed.

The final clip shows 80mL, which completely soaks a size 0 onesie and gives a good visual of what a larger vomit looks like.

While some spewing is very common in babies, if you're regularly seeing large vomits and your baby isn't gaining weight or growing as expected, it's worth seeking advice from your GP, dietitian, and lactation consultant.

Remember: what looks like a lot isn't always as much as it seems! 💛

Here are some tips for helping your letdown, this is particulatly helpful when you are sepereated from your baby, e.g. SCN or NICU.

Your body responds best when you have low stress levels, you feel calm, comfortable, and supported. Small strategies like warmth, relaxation, thinking about your baby, or having a support person nearby can help encourage let-down and make expressing a little easier.

Be gentle with yourself, support matters just as much as technique.

Breastfeeding comes with plenty of questions, and nutrition advice online, or even from your friends and family can feel overwhelming.
The good news? You don’t need a “perfect” diet while breastfeeding. Most foods are absolutely fine in moderation, and your nutrition should support both you and your baby.

Here are some of the most common questions I hear as a Dietitian & Lactation Consultant, from coffee and alcohol to foods to avoid while breastfeeding.

Remember: every mum and baby pair is unique, and evidence-based guidance matters.

Absolutely this! Watch your baby for feeding or hunger cues, not the clock!

Babies have their own feeding patterns!

Some feed at regular intervals. Others feed very irregularly. Some babies cluster feed. This means they nurse very often for a few hours and then sleep for several hours.

A good milk supply is established by following your baby’s feeding cues, not scheduling feedings. Cues may include licking lips, restlessness, rooting (turning head towards breast) or mouthing hands. Crying is a late hunger cue. Typically 8 to 12 feeds or more within 24 hour is expected.

There’s something incredibly powerful about skin-to-skin contact 💛

Holding your baby close, chest to chest, does so much more than create a beautiful bonding moment. It helps regulate baby’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing, supports better sleep, encourages successful breastfeeding, and can even reduce crying.

For parents, it boosts bonding, promotes the release of calming hormones like oxytocin, and can help ease stress and support emotional connection.

Sometimes the smallest moments create the strongest bonds. 🤍

“How often should my baby be feeding?” is one of the most common questions I hear, and the answer can vary more than you might expect.

Breastfed babies don’t follow a strict schedule, especially in the early weeks. It’s completely normal for feeds to happen anywhere from every 1.5 to 3 hours (sometimes even more frequently), and for feeding sessions to last anywhere between 10–40 minutes. Every baby, and every breast is different.

And then there’s cluster feeding.
Those periods where your baby wants to feed constantly (often in the evenings) can feel intense, but they’re very normal. Cluster feeding helps boost your milk supply and supports your baby through growth spurts and developmental brain growth.

If you’re ever unsure whether what you’re experiencing is “normal,” or you just want reassurance and practical support, I’m here to help.
