What’s the real cost of not supporting student wellbeing?

Disengagement. Disruption. Lost learning.

When schools invest in wellbeing, the results are clear — better outcomes, stronger culture, and more engaged students.

It’s not an extra. It’s essential.

“The sensory room has been a huge success for our neurodivergent students.

The calming bubble tubes and sensory rollers provide a unique and engaging experience, while the foam pit and quiet environment help students regulate and feel safe.

Students genuinely enjoy the space and benefit from the opportunities it provides for calming, sensory exploration and emotional regulation.

Working with Ability Space was a very positive experience.

Their team was easy to work with, flexible and highly collaborative throughout the design process.

They provided many valuable ideas and worked closely with us to ensure the space reflected the specific needs of our students, resulting in a sensory room that is both purposeful and unique to our school community.”

Wellbeing spaces provide students with a calm, supportive environment where they can regulate emotions, reduce stress, and feel safe when overwhelmed.

These spaces help improve focus, emotional resilience, and self-regulation, enabling students to return to learning more engaged and ready to participate.

By supporting diverse sensory and emotional needs, wellbeing spaces also promote inclusion, positive behaviour, and stronger overall student wellbeing outcomes.

“How many floor items should be in a sensory room?”

The goal is balance — include as many tools as needed to engage students, while keeping open space for movement, safe access and mobility aids.

We design rooms so they feel rich, not cluttered.

Sensory spaces aren’t one-size-fits-all — they can be energising or calming, depending on what a student needs at that moment.

At Ability Space, we custom design environments that respond to individual sensory input preferences.

Some students benefit from active, stimulating elements that support movement, alertness, and engagement.

Others need softer, quieter spaces that reduce overwhelm and promote regulation.

It’s not about “one perfect room” — it’s about creating flexible sensory experiences that meet students where they are.

🌈 At Our Lady of the Way, Wallan, staff wanted to give students a space to pause before classroom behaviours escalated.

They installed a portable Wellbeing sensory room with a transparent sliding glass door that allows natural light while maintaining calm supervision.

The Room Features
• Portable sensory room designed for school wellbeing programs
• Transparent glass door for visibility and safety
• Calming lights and soft textures for sensory regulation
• Flexible design for individual or small group sessions
• Supports students to re-regulate before rejoining class

The sensory room has become a valuable wellbeing space where students can reflect, reset and return to learning with confidence.

Every school leader has seen it.

A student who wants to engage… but becomes overwhelmed.

Not because they’re unwilling — but because the environment is too much.

Noise. Movement. Pressure.

For some students, it’s not a challenge of behaviour — it’s a challenge of regulation.

At Ability Space, we see sensory spaces as essential, not optional.
They create a place where students can reset, regain control, and return ready to learn — not excluded, not labelled, but supported.

For principals, this is what real inclusion looks like:
A school where every student has the opportunity to participate, not just cope.

Because when a child feels safe, everything changes.
