After years in the high pace corporate world in the med tech industry, always striving for more, always anxious, travelling a lot, juggling kids, work, travel and life, but never feeling that I was enough as a mom, as a woman and in my work life and overall ... feeling like I lost joy in my life... Lisha joined us for the SPACE Retreat in the Byron hinterland this past week, and I'm so moved by what she shared with me afterwards.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄?

Between the person you used to be and the person you are becoming?

A place where the old identities, and the old ways of feeling, thinking and being, no longer feel aligned... and you don't yet know who you are in the in-between.

Maybe it's a job transition. Maybe you're in perimenopause. Maybe a relationship is shifting.

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘁?

I've asked myself that question more than once.

At 21, I moved to the US on my own and had to build a life from scratch. Seven years later, I quit my job, left my friends and my boyfriend, and moved to Singapore for a one-year MBA. Then came Europe again for work. Then Australia, pregnant, where becoming a mother was its own huge threshold.

And then, after 20 years of building a career, I walked away from a well-paid job.

Every one of those moments had something in common: I found myself in 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 between who I was and who I was becoming. The old self was deconstructing, and the new one hadn't formed yet.

What made me leave was a quiet feeling of misalignment, and that same question: 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘵?

What surprised me was the question waiting on the other side: 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? Without the title, the job, the salary, the body I used to have?

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄?

✨ Do you look at the life you created and feel it's no longer aligned or energising?
✨ Have you already made the change, but your identity is still stuck in the past?
✨ Are you finding it hard to feel grounded in your new reality without a title, a job or a salary to show the world (and yourself) what you're worth?

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗲?

I remember the day I walked away from corporate life. Twenty-plus years of titles, ladders, meetings, decisions that mattered to everyone except, quietly, to me. And then one day, it was over. No more calls to take. No more title to answer to. No more salary landing in my account like clockwork, proof that I was worth something.

For a while, I didn't know who I was without it.

𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦? 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘺? 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘐'𝘥 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥?

I'd spent so many years being measured, and measuring myself, by what I produced. My value had a number attached to it. My worth showed up on a payslip. And when all of that fell away, there was a strange, disorienting silence where my identity used to be.

So I did the only thing I knew how to do — I sat in it. I let the discomfort be there instead of rushing to fill it with the next title, the next project, the next proof of my worth. And little by little, something else began to surface. Not a new role to perform, but an old truth I'd buried under decades of doing: that my value was never only in what I did. It was in who I was becoming. In my being, not just my doing. In my realigning, again and again, with what actually mattered. In my presence — the quality of it, not the productivity of it. In my simple, unearned existence.

That truth didn't arrive all at once. It came in fragments, on quiet mornings, in moments I would once have filled with busyness. It's still something I have to remember on purpose, some days more than others.

This isn't a question that has a tidy answer, and it isn't a sign that something's gone wrong when you feel lost without the role. It's what happens when an identity that was built almost entirely around doing suddenly loses that scaffolding. The discomfort isn't weakness — it's information. It's pointing you toward the parts of yourself that got quietly set aside while you were busy proving your worth.
