Build Tom Price Hospital

Build Tom Price Hospital In 2021 the State Government promised Tom Price $12.8 million for a new Hospital. To this day not one piece of dirt has been turned. Enough is enough.

Authorised by Audra Smith, Shire of Ashburton, Lot 246 Poinciana Street, Tom Price. Bandages Won't Fix Broken Promises. The Tom Price community was promised a new hospital on 26 February 2021 as part of the 2021 State Election. The Shire of Ashburton welcomed this commitment, which was boosted by a generous $20 million contribution from Rio Tinto Iron Ore. The hospital is old, outdated and hasn't changed for 30 years. The Tom Price community has been patient – but it’s been three years and not one piece of dirt has been turned. We have reached out on behalf of Tom Price residents and locals, to advocate for the new Tom Price Hospital with no result. President Smith, backed by the Ashburton Shire Council, is taking the fight on behalf of the community to the Minister. We demand accountability from the Minister for Health. It's time for Amber-Jade Sanderson to fulfill her promise so that families aren't torn apart, with children being raised in hospitals while their mothers sleep on beds 1500 kilometres away from home, deprived of the security and comfort of their own surroundings because necessary care isn't available in their hometown. The WA Government announced the official commencement of construction on the new Paraburdoo Hospital. 🏥

The attached renders showcase the new hospital which will include a new emergency department, a two-bed short stay unit, and integrated primary and community care services, including a private GP clinic. The facility will also deliver a flexible model of care, enabling patients to access a range of short-stay inpatient services, assessment, treatment, and ongoing care closer to home, reducing the need to travel for care.

Shire President Audra Smith is pleased to see the next stage of the project commence and the lasting benefits it will bring to the Paraburdoo community.
"Paraburdoo residents and community members have waited for this hospital for years, and now they are receiving their wish. Following the community advocacy campaign to build the Tom Price Hospital, I am glad to see Paraburdoo be included and improve the much-needed healthcare improvement to our region.

"Thank you to Rio Tinto for its $20 million contribution and to the WA Government for its commitment to delivering this vital infrastructure. We will continue to work closely State Government and WACHS throughout the build and supporting this important project for our community. The hospital represents a significant investment in the future of Paraburdoo and will ensure residents have access to modern, high-quality healthcare closer to home for generations to come," she said.

Concrete Progress Marks Major Milestone for New Tom Price Hospital

The future of healthcare in Tom Price has taken another significant step forward, with the first major concrete pour now complete at the new Tom Price Hospital site. The milestone marks an exciting stage in the delivery of the $92.8 million facility, which will provide modern healthcare services for the community for decades to come.

Backed by a $20 million contribution from Rio Tinto, the new purpose-built hospital will include a contemporary emergency department, primary care services, private consultation rooms, a four-bed inpatient ward, as well as dental and pathology services.

The project remains on track for completion in late 2027, with services at the existing Tom Price Hospital continuing uninterrupted throughout construction.

Shire of Ashburton President Audra Smith said the milestone was a welcome sign of progress for a project the Shire strongly advocated for on behalf of the community.

"This is a truly exciting milestone for Tom Price and the wider Ashburton community. The Shire advocated strongly in 2024 for investment in a new hospital, highlighting the importance of modern healthcare infrastructure to support our growing region and the people who call it home.

"To now see construction progressing and the foundations taking shape is incredibly rewarding. It transforms what was once a vision into something tangible that our community have waited for, can see coming to life. The new hospital will play an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of residents, families, workers and visitors across our region for many years to come.

"We thank the State Government, WA Country Health Service and Rio Tinto for their commitment to delivering this important piece of community infrastructure, and we look forward to watching the project continue to progress."

With further concrete pours scheduled through to October 2026 as part of the structural build, the new Tom Price Hospital continues to move closer to reality, representing a major investment in the future of healthcare for Tom Price residents and the wider Pilbara region.
