Brad, Zo, and the WHRAH team are deeply saddened to share that Jess Cooney, a much-loved member of our team, passed away last week following a courageous battle with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma. We said our usual goodbye at Christmas and were devastated that this disease meant she could not return to work in the new year. We feel so fortunate to have had Jess in our lives. It was a privilege to share in her passion for social justice, to witness her professional growth and constant hunger for knowledge, and to hear — often — just how proud she was of her four girls, and the love she had for them, Andy, and of course Isla.
We send all our love to Andy, the kids, and the broader family. Jess will always hold a special place in our hearts — thank you for sharing her with us x
As a mark of respect, this week we’ll adorn the front of our Torquay offices with native plants and flowers in tribute to Jess and her deep connection to nature. Anyone who knew Jess in any capacity is warmly invited to add their own native flowers or cuttings — or choose from some we’ll have available — and to take a moment of reflection. You’re welcome to come past anytime.

A conversation really can make a difference. But knowing what to say, how to listen and when to act isn’t always easy.
Our Standard Mental Health First Aid course is designed to give you the practical skills and confidence to support an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
Across two engaging days, you’ll learn how to recognise the signs that someone may be struggling, approach difficult conversations, listen without judgement and respond appropriately - including in situations involving suicidal thoughts and other mental health crises.
Whether you’re a parent, colleague, friend, community member or simply someone who wants to feel better equipped to support the people around you, these are skills that can make a genuine difference.

Coregulation is the process of helping a child feel safe, supported and emotionally steady through connection with another person. Before children can independently regulate emotions, they first experience regulation with someone else - through calm voices, predictable support, presence and relationship.
Whether it’s a parent, teacher, therapist or caregiver, co-regulation helps build the foundation for emotional regulation over time.
We’ve created a simple co-regulation handout for families, available on our website under Resources → Parent Packs.

Last week our OT team were out and about completing kinder screenings in kindergartens across our community 👋
School readiness is about so much more than letters and numbers.
Kinder screenings help us understand how children are learning, moving, playing and engaging in their everyday world 🌱
These screenings aren’t about labelling children or expecting everyone to develop at the same pace. They’re about identifying strengths, supporting areas that may need a little extra help, and making sure children feel confident and supported as they move toward school.
Every child develops differently - and that’s exactly what we expect to see.
A huge thank you to the educators and families who welcome us into these spaces. We love being able to work collaboratively to support children in ways that are practical, compassionate and strengths-based.
If you’re an educator, kinder or family wanting to learn more about kinder screenings or OT support, our team is always happy to chat.

Big day of learning for our team at the Astris PME Clinical Summit in Melbourne, where Tash and Mikey spent the day exploring innovative wheelchair and seating solutions, hearing from industry leaders, and getting hands-on with some incredibly clever equipment.
One of the biggest takeaways? Good clinical outcomes don’t come from “textbook perfect” alone. The best solutions happen when evidence, creativity, and the client’s real-world priorities all work together.
From wheelchair propulsion techniques that reduce fatigue and injury, to seating solutions designed around comfort, function, and actual daily life - it was a reminder that the smallest adjustments can make a huge difference to participation and independence.
Also: unlimited barista coffee may or may not have enhanced clinical reasoning. ☕️
We love seeing our team continue to learn, question, trial, and bring fresh ideas back to the people we support.

Today is Earth Day, and it feels like the world could use a little extra care right now.
In the middle of tough times, it’s the small, steady things that matter most - looking after our spaces, our community, and each other.
Small actions. Done often. Still matter 🌏

Dear parents and guardians - we see you.
There’s no manual.
And even if there was, your child would’ve skipped to the last page and argued with it.
Our Parent Capacity Sessions help you make sense of behaviour, find the right words when things get tricky, and build strategies that actually work in your real life.
Less guessing.
More confidence.

At WHR Allied Health, we know progress often lives in the details, the routines, the transitions, the moments that don’t always get noticed. That’s where our team focuses. By paying attention to the small things, we’re able to support meaningful change in real life, for real people.
