Parents — this is something most people are NEVER told 😳

Keeping a dummy past 6 months may do more than affect your child’s teeth. Long-term dummy use can change the way your child’s mouth, jaw and airway develop. This may lead to mouth breathing, poor sleep, snoring, crowded teeth, bite problems and even airway issues as they grow.

The earlier the dummy habit is stopped, the better chance your child has for healthy facial growth, breathing and sleep 💛

Ankyloglossia in Newborns: Clinical Implications and
Management - A Narrative Review

Highlights

What are the main findings?

✅ Neonatal ankyloglossia ( Tongue Tie ) shows a weak correlation between anatomical appearance and functional impairment, underscoring the need for function-based assessment using validated tools and direct observation of breastfeeding.

✅ Frenotomy can provide rapid relief of maternal ni**le pain and short-term improvements in latch when significant functional restriction persists, but evidence for long-term benefits remains limited and heterogeneous.

What are the implications of the main findings?

✅ Clinical management should prioritize multidisciplinary, function-oriented evaluation and shared decision-making with families to avoid both under-treatment and unnecessary procedures.

✅ Standardized diagnostic criteria, outcome measures, and longitudinal research are essential to establish clear indications and optimize evidence-based care for affected infants.

A functional frenuloplasty is more than a simple tissue release.

At The Breathe Institute, our approach combines precise release and sutured reconstruction with orofacial myofunctional therapy before and after treatment to help restore mobility and support optimal function.

We also recognize that every patient is unique, which is why we may recommend additional supportive therapies and bodywork modalities based on individual needs.

Restricted tongue mobility can impact breathing, sleep, feeding, speech, oral function, and overall quality of life. If you suspect a tongue restriction may be present, visit www.thebreatheinstitute.com to learn more and explore available resources.
