PHYSIO POV - heres 3 lessons I learnt from my first marathon event.
1. Have a plan. Ramping mileage too fast is the no.1 driver of bone stress injuries and tendinopathies (Achilles, patellar). And going out too hot? Youβll pay for it in the last 10k when the engine blows up and every step hurts. Structured progression beats good intentions every time.
2. Fuel, fuel, recovery. Nutrition and hydration in the weeks leading in arenβt optional extras, but get them wrong and youβre loading a body that canβt repair itself. Which can allow load related injuries in but also severely effect performance. Get them right and recovery (and race day) look after themselves. Or do what I did & get a dietician on your team Paris Mooney - Central Coast Dietitian
3. Strength training. 2-3x/week, non-negotiable. Especially calf, quad, hams and glute strength. This is your injury insurance policy. 42.2k is a long way, make sure your race car is strong.
BONUS - Donβt be naive and assume you can just program your own running and S&C (or let Chat do it). Reach out to an expert for advice.
Got a race on the calendar or a ni**le creeping in? Get in touch and letβs get you on track!
