The abdominal belt sits through the diaphragm, belly, and deep core. It’s one of the main places the body stores tension related to control, suppression, and self-protection.
A lot of people with tension here don’t necessarily look anxious from the outside. They often look functional, capable, composed. But underneath there’s a constant holding pattern running through the stomach and breath.
Usually the breathing is shallow without them noticing. The ribs don’t fully expand. The belly stays tight even when they’re trying to relax.
This can develop in homes where there was tension, emotional unpredictability, criticism, conflict, or simply no real space for vulnerability. The body learns pretty quickly that it’s safer to hold things in than to fully feel them.
Over time that bracing becomes part of someone’s baseline state.
What it can look like:
• Tightness or holding through the stomach and diaphragm
• Feeling like you can’t fully breathe into the belly or ribs
• A habit of “sucking the stomach in” or staying subtly braced
• Anxiety that sits in the gut or solar plexus
• Feeling internally tense even when trying to relax
• Difficulty fully letting go, softening, or feeling safe in stillness
• Feeling like you always need to hold yourself together
This pattern often develops in environments where:
• There was chronic stress, tension, or unpredictability
• Emotional expression didn’t feel safe or welcome
• Vulnerability or need was shut down, ignored, or criticised
• A child learned to stay controlled, capable, or self-reliant
• Fear, grief, anger, or emotion had to be suppressed rather than expressed
• The body learned that tightening was safer than feeling
When this area begins to soften, people often notice they can finally exhale properly. There’s less pressure internally. Less gripping. Less feeling like they need to constantly manage themselves from the inside out.
If this resonates, this is just one layer,
I offer a 7 part series, where we systematically work through all the belts of tension,
