The abdominal belt sits through the diaphragm, belly, and deep core. It’s one of the main places the body stores tension related to control, suppression, and self-protection.

A lot of people with tension here don’t necessarily look anxious from the outside. They often look functional, capable, composed. But underneath there’s a constant holding pattern running through the stomach and breath.

Usually the breathing is shallow without them noticing. The ribs don’t fully expand. The belly stays tight even when they’re trying to relax.

This can develop in homes where there was tension, emotional unpredictability, criticism, conflict, or simply no real space for vulnerability. The body learns pretty quickly that it’s safer to hold things in than to fully feel them.

Over time that bracing becomes part of someone’s baseline state.

What it can look like:
• Tightness or holding through the stomach and diaphragm
• Feeling like you can’t fully breathe into the belly or ribs
• A habit of “sucking the stomach in” or staying subtly braced
• Anxiety that sits in the gut or solar plexus
• Feeling internally tense even when trying to relax
• Difficulty fully letting go, softening, or feeling safe in stillness
• Feeling like you always need to hold yourself together

This pattern often develops in environments where:
• There was chronic stress, tension, or unpredictability
• Emotional expression didn’t feel safe or welcome
• Vulnerability or need was shut down, ignored, or criticised
• A child learned to stay controlled, capable, or self-reliant
• Fear, grief, anger, or emotion had to be suppressed rather than expressed
• The body learned that tightening was safer than feeling

When this area begins to soften, people often notice they can finally exhale properly. There’s less pressure internally. Less gripping. Less feeling like they need to constantly manage themselves from the inside out.

If this resonates, this is just one layer,

I offer a 7 part series, where we systematically work through all the belts of tension,

Surrender Into Self is a guided somatic experience designed to help you step out of the patterns that keep taking over and reconnect with your body in a way that actually changes how you respond in real life.

A lot of people who come to this work have already done a fair bit of self-development.
They understand their triggers. They can reflect, analyse, and make sense of their experiences.

But when something real happens, a difficult conversation, emotional pressure, stress,
the same reactions still show up.

That’s because these patterns don’t just live in the mind.
They live in the nervous system, the breath, and the body’s way of protecting itself.

This workshop works directly with that.

What This Experience Includes:

Biodynamic Breathwork
A guided breath process that helps activate and move stored tension in the body. This can bring up emotion, sensation, or insight not through force, but by allowing the body to lead.

Somatic Awareness & Expression
You’ll be supported to notice what’s happening in your body and, where appropriate, give it expression whether through movement, sound, or emotion. This is where patterns begin to shift.

Integrative Sound Journey
We close with a grounded sound experience using instruments and frequencies designed to support integration helping your system settle, process, and absorb the work.

What This Work Is Really About:

This isn’t about pushing for a breakthrough or chasing an intense experience.

It’s about:

Creating enough safety in the body to stay present with what’s actually there

Building capacity to feel without shutting down or becoming overwhelmed

Allowing the body to release tension it no longer needs to hold

Developing a different relationship to your internal experience

Over time, this is what changes how you show up in conversations, in relationships, and in the moments that used to take you out.

Another key area of holding in the body
is the diaphragm.

The diaphragmatic belt sits around the lower ribs and upper abdomen.

It plays a central role in how we regulate emotion
because it directly controls the breath.

"In India, since ancient times, the chanting of Om mantra has been established as one of the most powerful practices in meditation and spiritual traditions.

Om, which is also written as AUM is not a mere sound, it is known to have the vibrations of the universe. It is believed to have the resonance of the entire creation.

Owing to this, it creates certain vibrations in the human body and brings harmony to the body and mind. In more recent times, psychological studies and scientific research has revealed validating facts about Om chanting that our ancient sages have known for centuries.

Om meditation has been proven by modern research to have beneficial effects on a person’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing" - The Yoga Institute

In the chest is another place we tend to hold a lot.

The thoracic belt covers the chest, ribs, upper back, shoulders and the arms.

It’s tied into the heart, into how we deal with feeling, connection, loss.

This is where the body tends to brace when something feels too much.

Not always in an obvious way, you might notice the chest tighten or your breathing becoming a bit more shallow.

Sometimes it shows up in the shoulders holding more tension than they need to and instead of staying connected to what you’re feeling, there’s a subtle pull away from it.

What it can look like:
• A constant tightness through the chest
• Not quite being able to take a full breath
• Shoulders carrying more tension than they need to
• Feeling emotionally numb at times or shutting things down quickly when they come up
• Pulling back in relationships without really meaning to
• Finding it hard to stay open when things get close
• A hesitation to reach out or a tendency to hold people at a distance

This pattern often develops in environments where:
• Growing up in environments where emotion didn’t have much space
• Grief not being acknowledged or processed
• Vulnerability not feeling safe, even in subtle ways
• Experiences of hurt, rejection, or loss in connection
• Learning that it’s easier to close off than to stay open

So how we adapt is we brace and put up armour, we protect.

This becomes an issue because the more we guard, the less available we are.

When we work on this belt, we can chip away at this armour, release tension from the chest, breathe fuller, connection is less of a threat and we interact with the world more from our authentic selves.

If this resonates, this is just one layer.

I run a 7-part somatic series where we work through each belt of tension systematically and safely.

Another key area we hold tension,
is around the mouth and throat.

The oral belt is deeply connected to need, nourishment, and connection.

This is where we first learn what it means to receive,
to be fed, soothed, held, and responded to.

And when those experiences are inconsistent, overwhelming, or missi

the body adapts.
Instead of expressing need freely…
we start to manage it.

The ocular belt forms early
when the nervous system is overwhelmed by too much stimulation, unpredictability, or fear.

Instead of processing what’s happening,
the system adapts by pulling awareness away from the body

What it can look like:

• Feeling spaced out or disconnected
• Living in your head, constantly thinking
• Difficulty with eye contact
• Scanning your environment without realising
• Tension around the eyes or forehead
• Sensitivity to light or visual overwhelm

It often develops in environments where:

• There was too much stimulation too early
• Caregivers were unpredictable or overwhelming
• There wasn’t a sense of safety in being seen
• The system had no way to process what was happening

So the body adapts, it withdraws and protects.

If this resonates, this is just one layer.
I run a 7-part somatic series where we work through each belt of tension, systematically, and safely.

Your personality isn’t who you are,
it’s how your body learned to survive.

Most of what you experience day to day,
stress, overthinking, emotional reactivity, disconnection,

isn’t just in your mind.
It’s held in the body.

In patterns of tension
that formed over time
to protect you.

In this series, I’m breaking down the 7 belts of tension

how they form, and how they shape the way you experience life.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your head,
disconnected from your body,
or like you “know” things but can’t shift them,

This might interest you,

Follow along for the full series 😁
