The Australian two-dollar note was first issued in 1966 with the introduction of decimal currency, replacing the ยฃ1 note which had a similar green colour. It remained in circulation until 1988, when it was replaced by the two-dollar coin. The $2 banknote represented the country's agricultural industries, with wool and wheat symbolised through John Macarthur and William Farrer.
On 14 June 1988, the paper note was officially withdrawn and replaced with a distinctive gold-coloured coin. The change was made because coins last far longer in circulation and are more cost-effective than banknotes.
