As of 1 March 2026, we regret we have to increase our treatment prices by a maximum of up to 10%. This is our first treatment price increase in the last 4 years, and whilst we understand the increased cost of living of recent is hard on us all, price increases by our suppliers of consumables, energy and lease costs have forced us to have to impose these increases. We apologise but trust you will understand.

From Breakouts to Brilliant Skin

Effective Acne Solutions with LED Light Therapy

In the ever-evolving world of skin care, light therapy has become one of the most powerful tools in a professional aesthetician’s tool kit. LED (light-emitting diode) light therapy is a popular non-invasive, science-backed treatment that has proven particularly effective in treating acne. For skin therapists and dermatologists alike, understanding the mechanisms, benefits and best practices of LED light therapy can be pivotal in enhancing treatment outcomes and expanding service offerings.

A Historical Glimpse into LED Light Therapy

Initially used to accelerate wound healing in NASA astronauts, LED light therapy has since been adopted for a wide array of dermatological concerns. Its application for acne has garnered particular attention, thanks to its ability to target bacteria, inflammation, keratinocyte and sebum overproduction, without the need for more invasive procedures or pharmaceuticals.

The Science Behind LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy works by delivering specific wavelengths of light into the skin to trigger biological processes. Each color or wavelength of light penetrates the skin at different depths and elicits unique cellular responses. For acne, the most relevant wavelengths are:

+ Blue Light (465 nm): Penetrates the epidermis and targets Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria responsible for inflamed acne. Blue light activates porphyrins produced by the bacteria, leading to the release of singlet oxygen that destroys the bacterial cells.

+ Red Light (640 nm): Penetrates more deeply into the dermis, stimulating collagen production, reducing inflammation and accelerating wound healing. Red light is especially effective for reducing post-acne redness and supporting the skin's repair process.

+ Near-Infrared Light (880 nm): Though less commonly discussed in the context of acne, infrared light can also support skin rejuvenation, reduce inflammation and improve circulation, aiding in the healing of active breakouts.

Advantages

LED light therapy presents a multitude of benefits for patients:

1. Non-Invasive and Painless

2. Safe for All Skin Types

3. Adjunct to Other Therapies - LED light therapy can be combined with chemical peels, microneedling or nano exfoliation, microdermabrasion, extractions or topical products to enhance results. For example, using red light post-extractions can reduce inflammation and calm the skin, minimizing potential for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Not all LED devices are created equal!

Make certain the LED System being used by your skin clinic are TGA approved, clinically tested and make sure to check that the device is actually cleared for the condition you wish to treat. Many clinics only use cheaper machines purchased online and not tested.

Treatment Protocols

Standard treatment protocols typically involve sessions 2-3 times per week for 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the acne. Maintenance sessions may be recommended once weekly or bi-weekly thereafter.

Pre- and Post-Treatment Care

Your clinician should double cleanse the skin area to be treated prior to an LED session.

Professional skincare products specially formulated for the various types of acne are available at our clinic.

Considerations and Contraindications

A TGA Approved LED Device when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions is considered extremely safe and low-risk.

LED light therapy is no longer a niche or adjunctive treatment and is now a scientifically-validated, client-loved solution for acne that blends efficacy with comfort and safety. For estheticians and dermatologists alike, integrating LED into acne protocols offers a modern, gentle and effective way to deliver real results.

Combat Winter Dry or Dehydrated Skin

Between the harsh winter weather and indoor heaters, this can lead to the build-up of dry dead skin cells. These skin cells sit on the surface of our skin and can leave our skin appearing dry, lifeless and dull. Not only can this lead to a lifeless dull complexion, but it can also lead to dryness, blocked pores, and congestion and inhibit our skincare actives from penetrating, slowing benefits and results.
This is when the application of resurfacing products comes in, to assist in removing the build-up of dry dead skin cells by exfoliating the outer layers of the skin to reveal a fresher, more radiant look. This will promote skin radiance to brighten your complexion, even skin tone and improve skin texture as well as inhibit dry skin from flaking that the cold weather and low humidity, that winter brings.

Skin dryness and dehydration are common, and although they are separate skin concerns the two are closely linked. If the skin is dry, it will inevitably lead to dehydration, and if the skin is dehydrated, it can lead to skin dryness.

Dehydration refers to a lack of water in the skin, whereas dryness refers to a lack of skin lipids and water due to a poorly functioning skin structure and physiology.

Keeping the skin hydrated is essential as all biological processes, even those within the skin, rely on its presence. Without skin hydration, enzymes required for skin cell production and barrier function maintenance cannot function optimally leading to the formation of dry skin.

The ability of the skin to maintain hydration relies mostly on two aspects:

1. The natural moisturising factor within the skin and its ability to hold water

2. The barrier function of the skin

Skin hydration is also influenced by the amount of sebum present on the surface of the skin, acting as an extra barrier to water loss. Within the second layer of the skin, the dermis, is hyaluronic acid which is important for the maintenance of hydration in this region.
Causes of skin dehydration and dryness may include:

• Air-conditioning: these systems reduce environmental humidity when used in both cooling and heating states, which draws water from the skin

• Environmental and seasonal changes: low humidity, cold weather, exposure to wind

• Aging: as we age our skin barrier depletes, physiological function decreases, sebum production slows and natural moisturising factor levels are decreased, hence skin dryness and dehydration may result

• UV exposure can lead to a decrease in the production of filaggrin, which is an essential structural protein involved in developing our skin barrier lipids. Without these lipids, our barrier function is compromised hence it can become rapidly dehydrated and dry. UV exposure also decreases the levels of natural moisturising factor within the skin

• Hormones: during menopause, as oestrogen and progesterone levels decline there is an increase in skin dryness and dehydration

• Mechanical disturbance of the skin barrier: scratching, rubbing of clothes or injury

• Frequent skin washing with the use of harsh detergents: can strip skin lipids and moisture via a reduction in the level of natural moisturising factor and skin lipids

• Sodium lauryl sulphate and other detergents can increase water loss

• Chronic diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and diabetes

• Malnutrition inclusive of a low-protein diet

• Psychological stress

• Medications

Symptoms of dry skin may include:
• Scaly, flaky, rough skin
• Faint inflammation
• Dullness
• Itching
• Redness
• Tightness
• Skin cracking
• Increased incidence of skin tears, infection, dermatitis and pressure ulcers especially in the elderly

Treatment for dry and dehydrated skin is firstly focused on prevention and then followed by maintenance. The optimal strategy involves moisturisation through the application of topical skincare products to rehydrate and nourish the skin, with a focus on repairing the skin barrier to reduce further water loss and subsequent dehydration.

Moisturisers have multiple actions on the skin and at various depths, depending on their formulation. They contain emollients and humectants, which soften and smooth, and draw water and hold it into the skin respectively. Skin cells can swell up to 50% when they are fully hydrated, such as in a humid environment. When the skin is hydrated, it is more supple due to an improvement in flexibility, strength and elasticity.

To manage dry skin it is also important to use mild cleansers and avoid the use of soap due to its alkaline pH further drying out the skin. When cleansing or washing the body, it is recommended to shower or bathe with lukewarm water to prevent further dehydration.

Common skincare ingredients incorporated into emollient and humectant moisturisers include glycerine, ceramides, macadamia oil, hyaluronic acid, dimethicones, triglycerides, coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, squalene, niacinamide, allantoin, urea, essential fatty acids, alpha hydroxyl acids, sodium PCA and vitamin E.

And let’s not forget everyday body hydration. It is also suggested that drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day will influence skin hydration positively. There is minimal high-quality research that has been performed in this specific area, however a common theme is that if you increase your water intake when previously it was low, it may lead to a small increase in skin hydration.

BAKUCHIOL - A Serious alternative to your everyday Retinol Vitamin A in your skincare regime.

Retinol is one of the best-known skincare ingredients on the market. An over-the-counter (OTC) version of retinoids, retinol is derived (made from) Vitamin A and is primarily used to treat mature-looking skin concerns as well as acne.

Whilst Retinol is the go-to ingredient in many consumers' anti-aging regimens, a new study reveals that Bakuchiol is just as effective—with less skin scaling and stinging. The research, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, showed that both bakuchiol and retinol equally decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation.

Nature's Retinol: BAUKCHIOL

Bakuchiol is a plant-based chemical compound mainly isolated from Psoralea corylifolia, or babchi, a plant used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Three Skin Benefits of Bakuchiol
1. Alternative Solution for Sensitive Skin
It has soothing, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that help to comfort skin and minimise issues associated with sensitivity and reactivity. It can also be used on sensitive skin types with present eczema/atopic dermatitis, rosacea and cosmetic intolerance syndrome.

2. Slows Photo-aging Process
According to research, bakuchiol has the potential to stop photoaging before it starts, when applied topically. Clinically, bakuchiol is shown to improve signs of the photoaging process, which includes fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation, to a degree comparable to retinol, even after UV exposure. Plus, it works by increasing cell turnover (just like retinol), but it doesn't have the same sensitising effects that retinol does including flaking and peeling. In turn, it stimulates collagen production and improves skin laxity and bounce.

3. Can Ward Off Cancer-Causing Cells
Studies show that bakuchiol has chemo-preventive properties that inhibit and suppress the proliferation of skin cancer cells by targeting Hck, Blk, and p38 MAP kinase (enzymes that speed up chemical reactions in the body).

You want a Vitamin A retinoid serum to treat your skin for aging or acne but you have sensitive skin or you realise regular Vitamin A retinoid serums are light sensitive and shouldn't be applie during the day?

BAKUCHIOL might just be your new skincare saviour!

Retinol is one of the best-known skin care ingredients on the market.

Nature's Retinol: 3 Skin Benefits of Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is more than just a retinol-alternative. In fact, scientists have been taking it seriously, researching its various beneficial properties in skin’s overall health. Here’s a look at three scientifically backed benefits of bakuchiol.

1. Alternative Solution for Sensitive Skin

2. Slows Photo-aging Process

3. Can Ward Off Cancer-Causing Cells

Sounds good, right? Well, as previously mentioned, bakuchiol is not only as effective as retinol at targeting fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone; it’s also less irritating. Much like a retinol, bakuchiol triggers the genetic pathway in skin cells to create several types of collagen that are useful in skin health and anti-aging. However, it doesn't cause stubborn dryness or irritation. Plus, unlike retinol, which can make the skin more sensitive to the sun (always make sure to wear SPF during the day), bakuchiol may actually help to make skin less sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays.

Bakuchiol – a WIN – WIN!
