On Wednesday, members of the St Louis Care team had the privilege of attending an event hosted by the Australia Day Council of South Australia, featuring guest speaker Professor Henry Brodaty AO.

Professor Brodaty was named Senior Australian of the Year for 2026 in recognition of his pioneering work in dementia research, treatment and advocacy. His passion for the field was deeply personal. After his father was diagnosed with dementia at just 52 years of age and passed away at 59, Professor Brodaty dedicated his career to improving understanding of dementia, advancing treatments, and championing government support for education and care programs.

One of the most encouraging messages from the day was that there are practical steps we can all take to help reduce our risk of dementia and support healthy ageing:

💙 Stay physically active – aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day
💙 Keep mentally active – challenge and stretch your brain regularly
💙 Maintain a healthy diet - eat whole foods and minimise processed foods
💙 Stay socially connected – maintain relationships and engage with others
💙 Manage your blood pressure and cholesterol level – have regular health checks with your GP

At St Louis Care, these principles are embedded across all our services. Whether through our residential Nursing Home, St Louis Homes, Home Care services or Allied Health programs, we support people to remain active, connected, independent and engaged through lifestyle activities, social opportunities, health support, cooking and shopping assistance, and personalised care.

Growing older does not have to be something to fear. With the right support, healthy habits and meaningful connections, ageing can be embraced as a new chapter – one where people continue to live well, maintain their independence and enjoy a good quality of life.

Feeling the winter chill? These tips can help 💡

Cold weather can disrupt our daily routines. As Occupational Therapists, we understand how changes in temperature and darker days can impact our energy, muscle tone, movement and sensory regulation.

Here are a few simple winter tips:

❄️ Cold weather can drain your energy faster. Pace yourself and prioritise important tasks when your energy is at its highest.
❄️ Going from a warm room into freezing wind can cause sensory overload. Create a “warm-up” routine.
❄️ Try calming indoor activities involving gentle physical work, such as kneading dough or doing wall push-ups, to help reset your nervous system.
❄️ Cold weather can make muscles stiff and harder to control. Use a heat pack or warm shower to help ease stiffness.
❄️ Darker afternoons can make it trickier to move around safely. Keep pathways clear and turn lights on earlier for safety.
❄️ Don’t let the rain stop your social goals! Stay connected with indoor social activities such as indoor sports or meetups at community centres.

Small adjustments can make winter routines feel a little easier 💙

Physiotheraphy Tip 💡

Consistency matters more than intensity.

A small amount of regular exercise done often can have a much bigger impact than occasional big workout sessions. Building simple habits into your daily routine can help improve strength, mobility, balance and overall wellbeing over time.

Small steps, done consistently, really do add up. 👟

Leading the way with AI in Aged Care

At St Louis Allied Health, our aim is to always be a step ahead of the curve in both our client interactions, business operations and government compliance.

As an early adopter of AI in Aged Care, CEO Maris Naish and BOM Kai Schmidt were invited as keynote speakers at the “AI & Technology in Aged Care Forum” in Sydney last week. They shared insights from their AI implementation journey, highlighting how technology is reducing administrative burden and supporting frontline care.

Heidi, our chosen AI platform, has proven to be a great tool to assist our staff to spend more of their valuable time caring for clients by assisting with report writing and care plan documentation – giving our staff more valuable face-to-face time with those in our care.
