What would you try first? 👀

Rather than immediately asking, *“How do we stop this behaviour?”*, take a moment to consider:

💭 What might the child be communicating?
💭 Could the sensory environment be overwhelming?
💭 What could we change to help them feel more comfortable and regulated?

Sometimes, supporting a child starts with changing the environment — not expecting the child to change.

I am looking forward to joining Yass Valley Library for an evening exploring raising children with a disability, navigating a diagnosis and creating more inclusive communities.

Drawing on my personal lived experienced and my professional experience supporting children, families and educators, I will share insights into:

✨ Raising children with disability
✨ Navigating a diagnosis
✨ The realities of hidden disabilities, including autism
✨ The impact of isolation on families
✨ How educators and communities can better support children and families
✨ Creating more inclusive communities

I will share insights from her books, Embracing Disability in Early Childhood and Mums Thrive On, followed by an opportunity for questions and conversation.

3 THINGS EDUCATORS CAN TRY TOMORROW 💚

Supporting neurodivergent children doesn’t always require big changes. Sometimes, small adjustments can make a big difference to a child’s ability to participate, communicate and feel comfortable.

Try the following:

⏳ Giving extra processing time - ask, then pause. Give children the time they need to understand and respond.

🔇 Reduce unnecessary sensory input - consider noise, lighting, visual clutter and other things that may be overwhelming.

🧩 Offer more than one way to participate - sitting, standing, moving, observing or joining in for shorter periods can all be meaningful participation.

Inclusion isn’t about making every child fit the same mould. It’s about creating environments where every child has a genuine opportunity to engage.
