Lower back pain can sometimes be more than just a sore back.

In this video, Dr Jesse Georgiadis (Chinese Medicine Practitioner) discusses a patient presentation involving lower back pain, where a disc bulge was believed to be irritating nearby nerves.

Watch to learn more about how Chinese Medicine may be incorporated into the management of these types of presentations.

There isn't a handbook that comes home with your baby.

A lot of parents have questions about sleep, feeding, reflux, head turning preferences, development and whether what they're seeing is normal.

I've put together a blog that explains some of the common reasons babies are brought in for an osteopathic assessment, what happens during an appointment and answers some frequently asked questions.

You can read it here by clicking the link: https://www.waggaosteo.com/post/osteopathy-for-babies-supporting-your-baby-s-comfort-movement-and-development

If you came in with jaw pain, would you expect your osteopath to start on your back?

One of the things Osteo Aleasha enjoys about osteopathy is that we don’t just focus on the area that hurts.

When someone comes in with jaw pain, Aleasha will assess and treat areas such as your back, shoulders, neck and surrounding muscles, depending on what she finds.

This video shows some of the osteopathic techniques that may be used during a treatment

Why does your Chinese Medicine practitioner ask to see your tongue?

One of the most unique aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is tongue diagnosis.

In TCM, the tongue is considered a reflection of what's happening inside the body. By observing the tongue's colour, shape, coating, moisture, and overall appearance, we can gather valuable information about a person's health and identify patterns of imbalance.

We're not looking for a single disease or diagnosis. Instead, we're looking for clues that help us understand how different systems of the body are functioning and interacting.

Did you know that different areas of the tongue are traditionally associated with different organs?

πŸ‘… Tip of the tongue β†’ Heart
πŸ‘… Front β†’ Lungs
πŸ‘… Centre β†’ Spleen & Stomach
πŸ‘… Sides β†’ Liver & Gallbladder
πŸ‘… Back β†’ Small/Large Intestine
πŸ‘… Root β†’ Kidneys/Bladder

Along with tongue observation, pulse assessment and a detailed consultation help build a comprehensive picture of your health.

No two tongues are exactly the same, which is why treatment in Chinese Medicine is always tailored to the individual.

The next time you're asked to stick out your tongue during an appointment, you'll know there's a lot more to it than meets the eye!

Jaw pain isn't always "just one of those things" you have to live with.

Clicking, locking, pain when chewing, headaches, ear symptoms and facial tension can all be associated with TMJ dysfunction.

As an osteopath, assessing and treating the jaw is something I regularly do in clinic.

I've written a blog explaining some common causes, symptoms and treatment approaches for TMJ dysfunction.

Most people associate tongue ties with feeding difficulties.

What many parents don't realise is that oral function can involve much more than that.

A baby's ability to latch, create suction, coordinate their tongue and feed comfortably can influence everything from feeding efficiency through to symptoms such as clicking, milk leakage, excessive wind and reflux.

After spending the weekend learning more about oral function in infants, one thing was reinforced again and again: it's important to look at the whole baby, not just one symptom.

Every baby is different, which is why a thorough assessment can be so valuable when feeding isn't going as smoothly as expected.

On the weekend I travelled to Melbourne to attend the Oral Function Intensive with Feed Move Thrive at the Abbotsford Convent.

Over two days I joined osteopaths, lactation consultants and dentists from across Australia to further develop my understanding of oral function in infants.

We explored topics including feeding, tongue and lip ties, reflux, suction dysfunction, and oral assessments, with a strong focus on helping babies and families receive the support they need.

One of the highlights was learning alongside practitioners from different professions and hearing the different perspectives they bring to infant care.

A big thank you to Kristy Greenwood and Philip Hand for sharing their knowledge and creating such a valuable learning experience.

I’m looking forward to bringing what I’ve learnt back to the clinic
