Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day: October 13th 💜

Throughout October, breast cancer awareness often centres on early detection, treatment and life after cancer. However, for people living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the reality is different.

MBC occurs when breast cancer spreads from its original site in the breast and nearby lymph nodes to distant parts of the body, such as the bones, lungs, liver or brain. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, it is treatable but not currently curable.

For those living with MBC, the experience often involves ongoing treatment, managing an incurable disease and navigating the physical and emotional challenges that come with it.

People living with metastatic breast cancer deserve to have their experiences acknowledged, their voices heard and their support needs recognised.

At Hunter Rehab Hub, we recognise that every person’s experience is different and that everyone affected by breast cancer deserves access to care and support that recognises their individual needs, circumstances and experiences.

This October, let’s broaden the conversation beyond early detection and survivorship to ensure that people living with metastatic breast cancer are seen, heard and included.

Awareness beyond October. Support at every stage. 💗

Breast and chest wall oedema: a lesser-known side effect of breast cancer treatment 🎀

When referring to lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment, we often think of swelling in the arm 💪

However, breast and chest wall swelling may be even more common than upper limb lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment but it’s often overlooked or dismissed as part of the “normal” recovery process 🤔

Breast and chest wall oedema can present as visible swelling, or less obvious symptoms such as feelings of fullness, heaviness, tightness, firmness, and changes in the texture of the skin and tissues of the breast and chest wall 💧

Understanding the signs and symptoms of breast and chest wall oedema can help people access appropriate assessment and management earlier before symptoms become more significant 💗

Think you may experiencing breast and chest wall oedema? Contact our team on 0480 604 578 for support 🌸

Struggling to get your compression garment on? Try this first 🧤

One of the simplest things you can do to make donning compression easier is to wear donning gloves.

They give you extra grip, making it easier to:
✨ Work the garment into position
✨ Smooth out wrinkles and folds
✨ Distribute the fabric evenly
✨ Avoid pulling excessively on the garment, which can damage the compression fibres

If you’re finding your compression difficult to put on, small changes to your technique can make a big difference!

It’s official. Matt Keogh and the Australian Government have accepted the writing on the wall. The 5k DVA Allied Health treatment cap is “off the table”.

A big thank you to all those involved in the “Scrap the Cap” campaign and putting pressure on the bureaucrats to rethink this proposal.

Lower limb lymphoedema after gynaecological cancer treatment 💜

Lymphoedema can develop following surgery or radiation therapy for gynaecological cancer, particularly when lymph nodes or lymphatic pathways are affected.

It doesn’t always appear immediately. Swelling, heaviness, tightness or changes in the tissues can develop during treatment or weeks, months or even years later.

Early assessment can help identify lymphatic changes and guide individualised management 🙌

If you’ve noticed changes in your legs following gynaecological cancer treatment, don’t ignore them. Reach out to our team for support!

💜 September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month 💜

A reminder of the importance of awareness, prevention, early detection, and regular healthcare appointments 🩺

Gynaecological cancers are cancers that affect the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix, v***a, va**na and fallopian tubes.

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of cancer, but may include:
• Unusual or persistent va**nal bleeding or discharge
• Bleeding after menopause or between periods
• Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain or bloating
• Changes in bowel or bladder habits
• Pain during s*x
• Changes to the skin of the v***a or persistent itching

Some symptoms may have causes unrelated to cancer, but persistent or unusual changes should always be discussed with your healthcare professional 👩‍⚕️

Understanding your risk factors, knowing your body, keeping up with recommended screening, and seeking medical advice when something doesn’t feel right can all help you take informed steps to manage your health.

Let’s educate, empower and advocate for women’s health — this month and every month 💜

Flat knit vs. circular knit — what’s the difference?👇

Flat knit garments:
• Made with a firmer, more structured knitted fabric
• Less likely to roll or cut in
• Can accommodate more complex limb shapes and skin/tissue changes
• Often considered when swelling is more pronounced or tissue is difficult to contain
• Typically more expensive, particularly when custom-made

Circular knit garments:
• Seamless construction
• Generally thinner and more lightweight with greater stretch
• Commonly used for mild–moderate swelling and when limb shape is relatively regular
• Often more widely available and affordable

The best garment depends on your swelling, limb shape, tissue characteristics, lifestyle and ability to manage the garment 🧦

Not sure whether your current compression is right for you? A compression garment assessment with our expert team can help determine the most appropriate option for your needs 🌸
