435 days of pumping

My goal was to make it to Mabel's surgery. I wanted her to have the benefits of breastmilk to help her recover but also to maintain my supply in the hope she may one day be able to return to the breast.

Exclusive pumping certainly hasn't been easy; more hurdles with mastitis, ni**le damage, blocked ducts and low supply than I ever experienced with my last breastfeeding journey. The hours sitting attached to a pump, dealing with bottles and milk warmers.

Mabel's surgery came and went in May this year. I was then waiting for her to fully heal and learn the skill of suction. We've been working with a wonderful osteo to ease tensions and optimise function. We've had a go with special ni**le shields that have an in-built supply line. Mabel still uses a combination of suck suck chew which is dangerous territory for ni**le vs teeth.

I'm not holding onto hope she'll ever make it back to breastfeeding, which is heartbreaking to come to terms with. I have no further goals or end date for when my pumping journey will end but I know I'm not ready to give it up just yet.

Not our usual content.
But we have been given these lovely orphans to care for, the kids are loving having sheep in the loungeroom 😅
Between feeding my baby and bottle feeding these two, hopefully I get some sleep 🤣

5 years ago today we welcomed Finley into our lives.

It was a life altering moment, as all birth is. So many changes in a short space of time.

New to parenthood.

A new perspective on pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

A new perspective on how I wanted my life and work to be.

Those next 12 months were a whirlwind as I learnt how to parent a child, breastfeed and rediscover the new dynamics within our relationship, and process a birth which I'd found traumatic.

In that first year, my partner and I decided to leave our stable jobs to start dairy farming for ourselves, to give our children a life on the land. It was then I realised I couldn't go back to working within the hospital system, caring for women in a fragmented way, with no continuity.

So we sold our house, brought some cows, and started our farming journey when Finley was 1 year old. I'll share more of his birth story soon. It's been hard to put into words the stories of my first two births. But I'll get there. So, for now,

Happy 5th birthday to my boy Finley.

And Happy 5th birthing day to me.
