What will it take to address the equity gap for rural and remote Australians? That was the question we were exploring in our recent webinar, Tackling the Equity Gap for Rural and Remote Australians, in partnership with Health Services Daily.

With The Hon. Bronnie Taylor, A/Prof Shannon Nott, Ben Chiarella and Josh Mundey, there was plenty to unpack, from models of care and scope of practice to funding, workforce and how we can build on what’s already working.

We’ve pulled together a wrap-up of the key themes and takeaways from the conversation in our latest blog post.

This week, the Visionflex team spent two days at NRRHC, co-located with the National Indigenous Healthcare Forum, in Sydney. One thing kept coming up: technology is not the answer. It's the enabler.

Day 2 featured a panel with Lindsay Moore (consultmed), Ben Chiarella (Visionflex) and Amy Coghill (SWSLHD), moderated by Abe Warwick (Visionflex), where they discussed the barriers and the proven pathways to advance virtual care adoption in rural and remote communities and a few things stood out:

Build the model around the clinicians and capabilities that are already in place, not just around the technology. Empowering existing local health providers with specialist advice and guidance in a timely manner is where the trust between patients and the care system begins.

Context and flexibility matters. No two towns need the same model. Virtual care models must be built with local input and engagement.

Don't try to transform your whole service overnight. Break it down into small, achievable changes over time equals big wins.

And none of it works without investing in the people delivering it.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to talk all things remote and Indigenous health. Small crowd, big appetite for change.

A nurse who no longer has to make the toughest calls alone, patients seen by a specialist without leaving their community, and a rural town that finally has care through the night.

That's the difference the Wānaka Overnight Acute Care program is making for the local community, run by Central Otago Health Services and powered by Spark Health and Visionflex.

We're proud to be partnering with Charles Sturt University School of Rural Medicine to embed virtual clinical training into its medical programs.

Medical education is evolving to meet one of Australia's biggest healthcare challenges.

This partnership is about preparing future clinicians to deliver high-quality care across rural and remote Australia while exploring scalable models that improve access for communities facing workforce shortages.

By giving students hands-on experience with virtual care, we're helping build a workforce that's ready for the future of healthcare.

We look forward to working alongside Charles Sturt University as they continue to innovate in rural health education and research.

FY26 was an exciting period for Visionflex. We finished the year with the announcement of our contract to supply Visionflex hardware across the NSW Health network in 2026.

The Visionflex hardware rollout will strengthen out-of-hospital community care, including Hospital in the Home (HITH), by equipping clinicians with clinical-grade technology to remotely monitor patients and support safe, high-quality care in community and home settings.

It's another great step towards closing the access gap and giving clinicians greater visibility of patients in the community, supporting earlier intervention and helping more people access care closer to home.

The Visionflex team spent a few days in Canberra at Wild Health's The Great Prevention Pivot last week talking with delegates at our stand about what's coming next for the system.

Here's the line that stuck: Australia can't treat its way out of the demand that's coming.

An ageing population and a shrinking care workforce are colliding, right now. That's not a future problem. It's a maths problem, and scaling today's system won't solve it.

What kept coming up as the actual answer?

♾️ Continuity of care. Not episodic, reactive treatment, but ongoing relationships that catch chronic disease and decline early enough to matter.

📈 Data, used properly. Predicting risk before it becomes a crisis, not just reporting on it afterwards.

🦾 AI, with real governance. Plenty of appetite for it in the room, very little appetite for it without clinical oversight attached. That balance is the whole game.

And underneath all of it: prevention has stopped being a policy aspiration and started being the only way the numbers work.
Virtual care fits into this story, not as a gadget but as a way of supporting a workforce that's stretched thin within the current limitations of the healthcare system.

Remote monitoring, specialist access for regional patients, support for people ageing at home. None of it replaces clinicians. All of it buys them time back.

It was great to see the Aspen Medical team present the Utopia/Urapuntja model of care that utilises the Visionflex platform. Real proof this isn't theoretical, it’s here and it’s working.

Thanks to hosts Health Services Daily / Wild Health Summits / Accenture and everyone who stopped by our stand for a conversation. The system's problems are well understood. What's interesting now is who's willing to step up and change the model.
