Every woman deserves culturally safe care.

Culturally safe care recognises the importance of culture, identity, family and community.

This National Reconciliation Week, we reflect on the role we all play in creating services that are respectful, inclusive and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
Whilst family and maternity care has come along way in the last 30 years, there is still a way to go to ensure cultural safety and providing services that meet the needs of families.
National Reconciliation Week gives us time to reflect on how each of us can be culturally aware and inclusive in our everyday life.

Pre-eclampsia… it’s not just swollen feet!

Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy condition that can affect multiple organs and become dangerous quickly if left untreated. It most commonly involves high blood pressure and can happen during pregnancy or after birth.

May was pre-eclampsia awareness month, so as May passes, we wanted to highlight the signs & symptoms associated with pre-eclampsia.

Symptoms can include:
• severe headaches
• vision changes
• swelling (especially sudden)
• upper abdominal pain
• nausea/vomiting
• high blood pressure
• reduced baby movements

If you experience any of these, let your care provider know asap. Trust your gut - if something doesn’t feel right, seek urgent medical advice.

My name is Alice.

I am a mother of nine children who are now all adults. Each of my pregnancies and births was different, which I feel helps give me a degree of understanding of pregnant, birthing and post natal women. Since having my first child I have loved learning about pregnancy, birth, breast feeding, post natal and mothering. I am also a doula which has taught me a lot about the many different ways pregnant, birthing and post partum women need to be supported.

As an older mother, I am passionate about supporting women, no matter what their story is, through this beautiful, life changing and empowering time.

Hi, I’m Emily - a Registered Midwife with 9
years experience.

I live in Adelaide with my partner and our two young daughters. I enjoy baking sourdough, exploring new coffee shops and doing craft with my toddler.

I’m legally blind due to loss of peripheral vision from Retinitis Pigmentosa, which gives me a unique understanding of the challenges that can come with disability, pregnancy and parenting.

I’m passionate about providing safe, inclusive and non-judgemental care, and helping parents feel confident and supported through pregnancy, birth and parenting.

I can see clients via Telehealth Aus-Wide (except NT&TAS) or face to face in metro Adelaide, often utilising your NDIS plan.

Contact us via DMC Support at [email protected] to learn more about our supports.

No one talks about this enough…

• how loud newborns are at night
• how often plans change
• how much you google everything (at 2am..)
• how long it takes to feel settled

It’s all normal - even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time!

What would you add to the list of things no one talks about enough?

Midwives are there for the big moments - and all the small, but just as important, ones in between.

Today we celebrate the dedication and support midwives all over the world provide every day to women and their families.

We are grateful for the midwives at DMC Support providing quality, inclusive and empowering midwifery care for women with disabilities.

What’s something your midwife did that helped you feel supported or empowered during your pregnancy, birth or parenting journey?

Guide Dogs don’t just lead the way - they support safe, everyday independence for people with vision impairment.

Fun fact: Guide Dogs are trained to disobey a command if it isn’t safe (called intelligent disobedience). How clever is that?

Today on International Guide Dog Day, we celebrate the incredible work the Guide Dogs and their trainers do, every day 🧡
