Regular maintenance sessions with Equine Bowen Therapy can play an important role in keeping horses comfortable, balanced and performing at their best — not just treating problems once they appear.

Bowen is a gentle soft tissue therapy that works through the muscles, fascia, connective tissue and nervous system. Because horses naturally compensate for soreness, tightness or uneven movement, small restrictions can build over time before obvious signs are seen. Maintenance sessions aim to identify and release these patterns early.

Benefits of ongoing maintenance Bowen sessions may include:

• Improved flexibility and range of motion
• Support for muscle recovery after work or competition
• Encouraging better posture and movement patterns
• Assisting circulation and lymphatic drainage
• Helping reduce tension and compensation through the body
• Supporting relaxation and nervous system regulation
• Maintaining comfort in ageing horses or horses in consistent work

Many owners notice their horses becoming softer through the body, more even in their stride, more willing under saddle and generally more relaxed after regular sessions.

Maintenance treatments can be beneficial for:
• Performance horses in regular work
• Young horses starting training
• Horses returning to work after time off
• Travelling or competition horses
• Older horses managing stiffness and wear
• Horses with recurring tightness or compensation patterns

Just like regular dentistry and farrier care, bowen therapy can become part of your horse’s ongoing wellness routine to help keep them feeling and moving their best.

What is Equine Bowen Therapy?
A gentle, hands-on therapy using targeted rolling moves over muscles, fascia and connective tissue. The built-in pauses between each set of moves allow the nervous system time to respond, helping the body reset and restore balance naturally — without force.

How Bowen may support your horse:

🧠 Nervous system balance
Encourages a shift into a relaxed state. Many horses show this through yawning, licking, softening or becoming sleepy — often leading to improved focus and a quieter mindset under saddle.

💧 Fluid movement & lymphatic support
May assist circulation of lymph and body fluids, helping with swelling, inflammation, stocking up and recovery after work.

🐴 Jaw, poll & head release
Gentle work through the TMJ and poll can ease tension carried in the jaw, tongue and head, supporting comfort and softness.

💪🏽 Muscle & fascia function
Supports better movement, stride and posture, while helping the body work through tightness, soreness and compensation patterns.

✨ Suitable for:
Performance horses • Rehab & injury recovery • Young horses starting work • Older horses • General maintenance

I’m excited to share that I’ve officially completed my Equine Bowen Therapy qualification 🐴 Bookings opening March!

📅 Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays — by appointment📩 Message to enquire about pricing and to book a spot.

What is Equine Bowen Therapy? A gentle, precise soft-tissue therapy using specific rolling movements over muscles, fascia and connective tissue. The pauses between moves allow the nervous system to process the input and encourage the body to rebalance itself — rather than forcing an adjustment.

How it helps your horse

🧠 Nervous system reset.. Bowen works primarily through the parasympathetic system. Horses often yawn, lick, lower their head or become sleepy during sessions — signs they are switching out of tension mode. This can improve relaxation, focus under saddle and reduce reactive behaviour.

💧 Lymphatic drainage & fluid movement.. Stimulates circulation of lymph and interstitial fluid which may assist with swelling, stocking up, inflammation and post-exercise recovery.

🐴 Facial & jaw release.. Gentle TMJ and poll work can relieve tension held in the jaw, tongue and head

💪🏽Muscle & fascia balance.. Encourages improved stride length, flexibility and posture while helping compensate for soreness, unevenness or compensation patterns.

✨Suitable for: Performance horses • Rehab & recovery • Young horses starting work • Older horses • Maintenance & wellbeing

Feel free to reach out — happy to chat about whether Bowen would benefit your horse 😊

🌿 Bowen Therapy & the Vagus Nerve – Helping Horses and Humans Alike 🌿

Another benefit of Bowen Therapy..

Did you know one of the ways Bowen Therapy helps the body heal is through the vagus nerve?
This powerful nerve connects the brain to the body, controlling digestion, heart rate, breathing, and even our stress levels.

✨ During a Bowen session, the gentle rolling moves calm the nervous system, release tension in the fascia, and encourage the body to shift out of “fight or flight” and back into “rest and repair.” This activates the vagus nerve — bringing balance to body and mind.

✨The vagus nerve is surrounded by facia, its branches travel through and connect into fascial layers, especially around the diaphragm, lungs, heart, and digestive organs.

✨ The Bowen move gently pulls apart glued or stuck fascia, which can become stiff, dry, and painful from stress, injury, or overuse. This allows hydration and fluid to return to the tissue, improving mobility, reducing discomfort, and restoring natural function.

🐴 For horses:
• Promotes relaxation and reduces stress
• Supports healthy digestion and gut function
• Helps release tension through the diaphragm and ribcage, improving breathing and performance

👩‍🦰 For humans:
• Reduces anxiety and stress
• Improves sleep, digestion, and breathing patterns
• Enhances recovery and overall wellbeing

Bowen therapy is gentle, non-invasive, and deeply effective — helping both horses and humans feel calmer, healthier, and more in balance. 💚

✨ I still have a few equine case study spots available, and I’m excited to share that I’ve now started the human degree! 🐴👩‍🦰

🌿 How Does Equine Bowen Therapy Work? 🌿
You may have heard me talk about Bowen Therapy for horses — but what’s really happening beneath the surface during a session?

✨Bowen Therapy uses gentle, rolling moves over specific points on your horse’s body. These moves help release tension, improve comfort, and support the body’s natural ability to rebalance itself.

One of the key areas Bowen targets is the fascia — a connective tissue that surrounds and connects every muscle, bone, joint, and organ in the body.

👉 The Bowen move gently pulls apart glued or stuck fascia, which can become stiff, dry, and painful from stress, injury, or overuse. This allows hydration and fluid to return to the tissue, improving mobility, reducing discomfort, and restoring natural function.

🌿 Benefits may include:

✅ Improved flexibility and range of motion
✅ Relief from stiffness, soreness, and muscle tightness
✅ Better posture and performance
✅ Support for injury recovery
✅ A more relaxed and comfortable horse

Many horses visibly relax during or after a session — you might see yawning, stretching, or softening through their body.

👐 I’m currently training in Equine Bowen Therapy and offering limited case study sessions to complete my practical hours.

📩 Message me if you’d like to book or find out more. I’d love to help your horse feel their best — gently and naturally 💚
