Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union Authorised by S. Beaman, Secretary, Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union, West End, 4101. Membership of the QNMU also provides for full membership of the ANMF.

The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) is the peak industrial and professional organisation for nurses and midwives working in public and private health and aged care in Queensland. The QNMU seeks to promote and defend the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests of more than 70,000 members. Members include:

Registered nurses
Midwives
Enrolled nur

Assistants in nursing (however titled)
Students
Anyone who undertakes nursing work

There is no other organisation in Queensland which provides comprehensive representation for nurses and midwives as both employees and professionals. The QNMU is a state-registered union and a branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF), which has branches in each state and territory, which means the Union is also active in promoting the interests of nurses and midwives on a national and international level. Members have the opportunity to be actively involved in the QNMU and decide our priorities through the Union’s democratic structure. Ultimately, it’s these priorities and policies which help influence and shape the practice of nursing and midwifery in Queensland. Nurses and midwives, through the QNMU, have a long and proud history of working together to achieve improvements to working conditions, to the profession and, through the broader union movement, to the lives of all Australians. Midwives are making a difference 💪

The Count the Babies campaign was powered by QNMU members, who shared their stories, signed petitions, spoke to decision-makers, and stood together to demand legislated midwife-to-patient ratios.

1 September marked a significant milestone, with ratios rolling out at Gold Coast (GCUH) and Cairns (CHHHS), while midwives in Townsville (TUH) and Brisbane (RBWH) celebrate a milestone of their own - one year of ratios!

But this win is bigger than ratios.

We know what happens when midwives stand together. We win.

TPCH ICU nurses are standing together with a clear message: Keep 12-hour shifts. ✊

When TPCH management threatened to remove 12-hour shifts, QNMU members got together, got organised and spoke up.

This is member power in action 💪

Members know removing 12-hour shifts won't solve the actual issues they're facing. The real challenges are workloads, safe staffing and burnout.

They're standing together to protect a roster that works for their ICU and calling for real solutions to fix those problems they face every day. That's what will support both nurses and patients.

The message to management is simple: listen to the nurses who know TPCH ICU best. Keep 12-hour shifts.

Have your say on Reproductive Health Leave 💜

Reproductive Health Leave (RHL) recognises that reproductive health, is health—and no one should have to choose between their wellbeing and their pay.

Since September 2024, in Queensland's public health system, eligible workers can access up to 10 days of paid RHL leave each year for:
🌸Endometriosis, adenomyosis and PCOS
🌸Menopause and perimenopause
🌸IVF and fertility treatment
🌸Miscarriage and other reproductive health procedures
🌸Preventative reproductive health screenings

Now it's time to share your experience.

The Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) have opened a survey to find out how RHL is actually working. Whether you've taken it once, taken it often, or haven't taken it at all.

Your voice helps to protect and improve access to RHL and could strengthen the case for better entitlements down the track for workers across Australia, for everybody including beyond the public sector.

Health care workers can experience moral distress or injury when situations at work conflict with their ethical beliefs.

Moral distress or injury can develop as a result of a one-off incident or from multiple events over time.

This module explores how health care leaders can identify, prevent and mitigate moral distress and injury in themselves and their teams.

It will help you understand moral distress, recognise its effects and take steps to prevent it from escalating into moral injury.

You will also learn how ethical and compassionate leadership can support workers experiencing moral distress or injury and help create a more supportive workplace.
