Sometimes you don't even realise you are damaging your skin barrier.
The barrier is the water layer with oil on top. When it is intact your skin stays hydrated and calm. When it is broken you get cracked skin, dehydration, irritation and breakouts.
Common ways your skin barrier can get damaged include over‑exfoliating, wiping away essential oils, constant rubbing, UV and even blowing your nose.
