Finals countdown is ON. 🏆 But are you playing through minor foot or ankle pain just to reach the end of the season?

It’s tempting to push minor niggles aside when major games are on the line. However, playing through sharp joint pain, swelling, or persistent limping can transform a minor strain into a complex recovery process.

Key signals you shouldn't ignore:
⚠️ Pain that worsens as the game progresses.
⚠️ Swelling that persists overnight.
⚠️ Altering your natural running stride to compensate for discomfort.

STEPtember is here! 👟 Increasing your daily step count is a fantastic way to boost cardiovascular health, but jumping from 5,000 to 10,000 steps overnight can catch your joints and tendons off guard.

When increasing activity, keep these tips in mind:
Progress gradually: Increase your steps by roughly 10–15% each week to allow soft tissues time to adapt.
Rotate your footwear: Avoid wearing the exact same shoe every single day to vary load patterns on your feet.
Listen to early warning signs: Persistent arch, heel, or shin tightness means it's time to slow the increase and assess your setup.

FAQ Friday 💬 "How can netballers avoid getting shin splints on hard court surfaces?"

Netball involves rapid acceleration, sudden horizontal stops, and high-impact rebounds, all on unforgiving timber or concrete courts. This rapid load spike is the primary trigger for shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome). 🏐

Shin splints occur when the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue surrounding your tibia become overloaded and inflamed.

If shin pain is lingering past 48 hours post-game, getting your mechanics evaluated early prevents a multi-week sideline stint.

ACT Tape or functional support, what’s the actual difference on game day?

Strapping tape can provide temporary joint feedback and limit sudden ranges of motion, which is great for acute support. However, tape doesn't fix underlying movement mechanics or muscle fatigue.

Combining appropriate support with tailored off-loading strategies and load management helps you move with confidence when the pressure is on.

As netball and footy finals approach, training intensity naturally ramps up. But how do you tell the difference between normal muscle soreness and something that needs clinical attention?

🏈 Calf Tightness: Usually feels like a dull, widespread ache through the meat of the muscle, typically settling down within 48–72 hours after recovery.
🏐 Shin Splints (MTSS): Tends to feel like a localized, sharp, or throbbing tenderness along the inner edge of the shin bone that can worsen during repetitive impact.

Ignoring persistent lower-leg pain during a load spike can turn a manageable issue into a multi-week sideline stint. Early biomechanical assessment helps identify load stress before it halts your season.

Heavy boots, hard concrete surfaces, and 10,000+ steps a day take a massive toll on your feet. If you’re stepping out of your work boots at the end of the day with aching arches or tight calves, it’s a sign your lower limbs are taking on too much load.

Pain isn't just a part of the job, it’s your body asking for a shift in support. Whether it's evaluating your boot structure, cushioning, or movement patterns, a clear assessment can make all the difference to your workday.

There is no single rule that suits everyone. Factors such as mileage, activity type, shoe construction and wear patterns all play a role. Regularly checking your footwear for signs of wear is a good habit.
