A unique CPD opportunity for dietitians working with clients with a physical disability!

Charity Spalding and I are excited to announce our
Disability-Specific Anthropometric Training Day, being held in Sydney on
Friday 12th March 2027.

If you work with children or adults with a physical disability, accurate assessment of body composition is an essential part of nutritional assessment.

Why?
People with physical disability often have an altered body composition, characterised by reduced muscle mass and bone mass.

As a result, relying solely on height, weight, BMI and MUAC can provide a misleading picture of nutritional status when compared with standard reference values.

For example, a person with a physical disability may have a low weight, BMI and MUAC but still have adequate fat stores.

This is why measuring fat stores matters.
Our practical training day will focus on developing the skills and confidence to accurately measure:
• Triceps skinfold thickness
• Subscapular skinfold thickness
• Mid-upper arm circumference
• Knee height

The day will also cover standardisation, landmark identification, positioning, equipment use and repeat measurements, with practical hands-on training.

📍 Sydney
📅 Friday 12th March 2027
⏰ 10:00am–4:30pm

Lunch, snacks and written guidelines/procedures are included.
If you work in paediatric, adult, disability or community nutrition and want to improve your confidence in disability-specific anthropometry, we’d love you to join us.

If there is enough interest in your location we will look at hosting another training day near you.

🧀 Is Bega Protein Cheese worth buying?

The answer is not a simple yes or no. It depends on your individual needs and variety of foods consumed.

Compared with regular tasty cheese, Bega Protein Cheese contains more protein, less fat, fewer calories and more calcium, but it also generally comes at a higher price. Not always, it’s worth shopping around and reading labels to compare products! Don’t be tricked by clever marketing.

For most people, regular cheese can be absolutely fine as part of a balanced diet. However, Bega Protein or a reduced fat cheese may be a useful option for people who are trying to increase their protein and calcium intake without significantly increasing their fat and calorie intake.

As always, there isn’t one “best” cheese. The right choice depends on your individual nutrition needs, health goals, budget and taste preferences.

I’m looking forward to speaking at Dietitian Connection’s upcoming event “Beyond the basics: Tube feeding across the lifespan masterclass” alongside Emily Farrugia.

This practical masterclass will explore tube feeding care across paediatric and adult settings, from supporting transitions from hospital to home through to enteral nutrition formulas, pumps and devices, and navigating NDIS access and equipment support in real-world practice. You’ll also hear from people with lived experience of tube feeding, including both patient and family perspectives.
Hope you can join us for what should be a really practical and valuable session.

This is definitely food for thought (pardon the pun!) Eggshells are rich in calcium in a form that is readily absorbed. The eggshells need to be prepared carefully to ensure any harmful bacteria such as Salmonella is destroyed. While I love the idea of reducing waste and recycling, I tried this and the eggshells need to be ground to a REALLY FINE powder otherwise it feels like eating sand! So if you are keen to try this, it definitely needs to be added to the right foods where the gritty texture won’t be noticeable.
