At Wara Yindi, we are proud to walk alongside incredible families in our community β and today weβre honoured to share the story of one.
This beautiful family of four shows what strength, love, and resilience truly look like.
π Alex is a kind-hearted young person with ASD Level 2 who loves taking things apart to understand how they work β and sometimes even fixing them. While anxiety can be a big challenge, Alex continues to face it in his own brave way every single day. Heβs also a passionate gamer who finds joy in his world.
πͺ Bella is a natural go-getter β thriving in sports, embracing every challenge, and stepping up as a leader who ensures no one feels left out. Her kindness and confidence shine in everything she does.
π€ Douglas (Dad) lives with both mental and physical health challenges, yet continues to be someone who shows up for others time and time again. Even when heβs running on empty, he remains a steady, caring presence for those around him.
π± Nikki (Mum) shares a deeply powerful journey of healing and growth. Living with mental health challenges since her teens and experiencing trauma from a young age after being removed from family, Nikki once felt defined by those experiences. But today, after years of hard work and self-growth, she stands stronger, more grounded, and more connected to herself and her family than ever before.
π¬ βThe biggest strength we have is being there for each other β especially on the hard days when it feels like everything is falling apart. We know we have each other.β
π Challenges in Our Community
This family has faced significant barriers when trying to access support locally in Whyalla β especially for Alex.
Services are limited, often unavailable, or require travel to Adelaide. Many supports have had to be paid out-of-pocket, with long waitlists and frequent knockbacks.
This highlights a very real gap in regional communities β where families are left feeling like there is no safety net when they need it most.
π What Makes a Difference
Having someone to talk to, ask questions, and walk alongside them has made a meaningful difference.
π¬ βHaving Jacinta there to talk to and ask questions has been amazing β itβs made me feel like Iβm not as alone.β
Access to safe spaces β where people can be themselves, speak openly, and feel heard without judgment β is powerful.
π What Families Need
Families in our community need:
Clear guidance on next steps
Accessible supports locally
Safe, non-judgemental spaces
Programs that meet children where they are
For Alex, simple supports like being able to communicate via text and having time to process emotions help him feel safe and understood.
π Hopes for the Future
This family hopes to see:
More local supports for children on the autism spectrum
Less need to travel long distances for support
Alternative learning spaces outside traditional schooling
A stronger, more inclusive support system in Whyalla
π¬ βJacinta, you have created an amazing place β it makes more of a difference than you know.β
β€οΈ Stories like this are why we do what we do.
We remain committed to building stronger supports, safer spaces, and more opportunities for families across our region.
