Marking the Winter Solstice, I’m reposting this .. from my archives 💖Winter in Chinese Medicine is a time to replenish, rest and reflect. Happy Solstice 💫. Rest.. it can be hard to get enough. However..are you getting the right types of rest? I recently came across the concept of the 7 types of rest ( by author and physician Dr. Saundra Dalton- Smith). It’s about getting a combo of rest types to help us to restore and reenergise.. I love this idea.
It can certainly be easy to lean into some rest activities more than others.. and good to note where the gaps are.
Here are some examples of each:
😴Physical Rest: getting adequate sleep. Settling the nervous system through practices such as yoga and breathwork.
🤔Mental Rest: setting good boundaries around work. Engaging in mindful activities/interests.
💗Emotional Rest: allowing time and space to freely express emotions.
🐾Social Rest: spending more time with the beings (human, furry, beaky) that love and energise us.
🎧Sensory Rest: taking regular breaks from devices and noise.
☀️Creative Rest: being in nature, looking at art, spending time around things that bring wonder.
💗Spiritual Rest: connecting with activities that bring you joy and a sense of purpose.. things that nourish the soul. 🤗

Winter is on its way. 💫 Whilst some of us may be reluctant to leave the warm weather behind, I feel some relief with the temperatures finally shifting. There are so many lovely aspects to Winter - slow cooked food, drizzly bush walks, open fires, and cosy socks to name a few.

Energy naturally moves inward in the cooler seasons and therefore, Winter is an important time to build strength, replenish energy reserves and balance the nervous system.

In Chinese Medicine, we focus on the Kidneys in Winter.

The ‘Kidney energy’ in TCM terms, is seen as our foundations or ‘gate of life’, where we draw our strength from. The Kidney energy is linked to fluid metabolism, adrenals, bones and also the reproductive system.

We can become deficient in this area from many factors, including overwork and long periods of stress. When the Kidney energy is depleted, it can lead to tiredness, feelings of overwhelm, insomnia or agitation.

Some good ways to help build and conserve the Kidney Energy in Winter:

🥣Eat warm and nourishing foods such as soups and stews.
🍠Eat seasonal nutrient dense foods such as root vegetables and legumes. 😌Practice Yoga and other meditative breathing practices
🛀Take some quiet time out for yourself.
📔Journal, draw, visit and art gallery, listen to music, daydream.
🏕️Rug up and spend time in nature.
🧦Keep your feet and lower back warm.

A good acupressure point for the kidneys can be found under the ball of the foot. It can be helpful to massage this area if you are feeling stressed or ungrounded

It is also important to nourish the heart 💖(Shen) in Winter to help maintain a sense of connection and joy even if the weather is grey and gloomy. Do the things that you love, whether that is reading, painting, dancing, cooking, bushwalking, or connecting with loved ones over a warming, wintery meal xx

💙 This season is a wonderful opportunity for reflection, consolidation and rebalancing.

Anyone else feeling the effects of the humidity at the moment?
Depending on your constitution you may feel energised or gross or somewhere in between.
I’m seeing many people struggling with fatigue, digestive issues, low immunity and persistent phlegm 🤢
If this sounds like you...Some useful strategies include making dietary and lifestyle adjustments to address the damp/ congestion that humidity can bring about. See below for some Chinese Medicine tips:

🍲Eat cooked, warm foods that are easy to digest. Light grains, root vegetables, quinoa, buckwheat, oats, and basmati rice.
🫜Add pungent vegetables to help with phlegm. These include: fennel, radish, rocket, watercress, spring onion and daikon.
🥣 Soups, slow cooked foods, rice congee and oat porridge are easier on sensitive tummies.
🌿Add some fresh herbs to meals such as coriander, dill and rosemary
🍠Roast some veggies with fresh rosemary.. yum!
🫖Try green tea, peppermint tea or if you are feeling chilly - fresh ginger tea
🚶🏻‍♀️Movement can help shift stagnant energy and fluids. Brisk walks in nature, dancing, something joyful where possible
🌸 Add some aromatic spice such as fennel seed or cardamom to aid digestion

❌Skip the cold smoothies and limit cold, raw foods
❌Limit fatty meats, fried foods, smoked meats and sugar.

💖Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs are great at addressing the imbalances that occur through these humid times. So reach out if you need support

Late Summer in Chinese Medicine 🧡 It’s pretty humid and lush at the moment.. hence the pic of our garden 😄. I’m seeing a lot of sinus and digestive issues in clinic during this time. In this transition between the seasons it’s really important to eat light and easy to digest foods. Aromatic herbs and veg/, including spring onion, radish,, rocket, coriander and basil. Light grains and seeds such as quinoa, buckwheat and basmati and easing off on the cold raw foods. This is a time of orange sunsets, cicada song and pumpkin plants. Enjoy xx
