It hurts so bad when
ALL YOU WANT IS...

→ Your horse to come running when you call
→ To dance and play at liberty—because they WANT to be there.
→ To say ‘YES, AND?’ to your cues—loving training sessions as much as you do.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN GET THERE
(even if you feel like you’ve tried it all)

My 3 Step
“Training Obsessed Protocol”
That has my horse whinnying with excitement and trotting to meet me at the training space.

Step 1 - Explore positive reinforcement

Using positive reinforcement offers the horse something they want in exchange for their participation, instead of doing what you want to avoid pressure.

When they are working towards something they value, the process becomes enjoyable.

Step 2 - Support their interests

Provide choice, set up various activities and let your horse choose what they want to do.

This builds confidence and shows you will listen and support their needs.

When they have a choice to participate, compared to being forced to do something, they will bring more enthusiasm.

Step 3 - Activate play

Reinforce fun, playful movement. Remind them how good it feels to run and play.

When movement feels good, it becomes motivating. Movement releases feel good hormones and lowers stress levels.

Go dance and play with your horse, you’ll both benefit.

It's heartbreaking when all you want is to spend time together with your horse but as soon as they glimpse the halter they're gone.

But the halter isn't the issue.

What they experience after being haltered is what needs investigating

Being caught means giving up their freedom, their choice, their agency. They can be forced into situations that don't feel safe, that they don't understand, so they shut down to cope.

None of this feels good, so they start avoiding being caught.

When the emotional experience linked to the halter changes, the response can too.

Here's how:

1. Acknowledge the feelings

Instead of rushing them through their emotions and pushing them through the fear, pause, hold space for their feelings.

When we push them, they go into survival mode.

We want to provide a safe, calm space, where they trust us enough to tell us how they feel.

When they feel safe, they can stay connected.

2. Provide choice

Creating moments where they get to choose what to do builds the connection between you, showing that you are there to listen and support them.

It builds their confidence in using you as a support system.

3. Asking nothing

Spend time asking nothing of your horse.

When spending time with you is relaxing, fun and obligation free, they’ll choose to engage with you.

When we focus on building trust and understanding over respect and obedience we create that magic connection you've always dreamed of.

Behaviour modification - POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Please be aware the use of positive this context is not about ethics but mathematics.

🥕Positive Reinforcement🍎
Positive = to add
Reinforcement = to increase the likelihood of the behaviour happening again

Positive reinforcement works by adding something the horse wants after performing a desired behaviour. This increases the likelihood they will repeat the behaviour.

Food is often used as the reinforcement in this case, sometimes scratches are used too. The reinforcement needs to be desirable to the horse.

Positive reinforcement is often applied via clicker training. A click or sound marking the desired behaviour and acting as a bridge between desired behaviour being performed and food delivered. It enables very specific parts of behaviours to be reinforced rather than just feeding at the end of the behaviour or behaviour chain where it can be less clear about what was being reinforced.

Clicker training allows for behaviours to be broken down into small increments and rewarded at each stage before building back up and creating behaviour chains.

Positive reinforcement is a principle of behaviour modification. Clicker training is a method of applying the principle of positive reinforcement.
