Before Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music or even a quick 30-second preview, this was how you trialled a CD.

You stood in Sanity with the oversized headphones on, scanning the back cover like you were making one of the biggest financial decisions of your young life. Because honestly, you were. CDs were not cheap, and buying a dud album with only one good single on it was a genuine late-90s tragedy.

Those listening stations were a lifesaver. You’d awkwardly stand there while someone waited behind you, flicking through the tracks, trying to work out if the rest of the album was worth your money or if you were better off waiting for the next So Fresh.

It was such a simple thing, but it was part of the whole ritual of buying music. Walking into Sanity, HMV, Brashs or Big W, checking the charts, looking at the new releases, and actually having to commit to an album.

As a mother, this is something I think about more often now because raising children has made me realize how much of adulthood is spent learning lessons we somehow missed along the way. I want my kids to grow into kind, resilient people who know how to understand their feelings, communicate with love, protect their peace, and handle life when things don’t go according to plan. Success matters, of course, but so does knowing your worth, building healthy connections, and finding the strength to keep going through hard seasons. The older I get, the more I understand that some of the most important parts of life can’t be measured by grades, and that’s exactly what I hope my children never forget. ❤️
