One of the biggest myths about va**ng is that people continue because they enjoy it.

In reality, many people are caught between two competing thoughts:

"I want to stop."

And...

"I'll quit later."

That internal conversation can go on for months, sometimes years.

Recently, I had the opportunity to join Christian and Bella on the i98FM morning show to discuss va**ng, smoking addiction, and why intelligent, motivated people often find themselves stuck in habits they genuinely want to change.

This short clip touches on some of the psychology behind that struggle.

A huge thank you to Christian, Bella and the i98FM team for making me feel so welcome.

I'd love to hear your thoughts:

Do you think va**ng is harder to quit than smoking ci******es, or easier?

Most people trying to quit va**ng are not weak.

They are exhausted.

Exhausted from the mental battle.

Exhausted from starting again.

Exhausted from feeling disappointed in themselves.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Christian and Bella on i98FM morning show about va**ng, ni****ne addiction and what actually helps people break free.

This is a short clip from that conversation.

What's been the hardest part about trying to quit va**ng?

"Can you hypnotise me against my will?"

I get asked this almost every week.

The short answer is no.

The long answer is more interesting.

Hypnosis is not something done TO you.

It is something done WITH you.

In fact, all hypnosis is technically self-hypnosis. My job as a clinician is to guide you into a state your brain already knows how to enter.

You do it every day without realising:

→ When you drive home and cannot remember the last 10 minutes
→ When you are completely lost in a book or film
→ When you scroll your phone and 40 minutes vanish
→ When you daydream in the shower and miss what someone said

That focused, absorbed state IS hypnosis.

The difference in my clinic is that we use it on purpose. With intention. To address something specific - anxiety, smoking, insomnia, fears, confidence, pain.

But here is what most people miss:

Hypnosis is a partnership, not a performance.

It requires three things to actually work:

1. You trust the practitioner
2. The practitioner genuinely listens to what YOU want to change
3. You do the homework between sessions

Skip any of those, and it falls flat.

The stage hypnotists you have seen on TV? Those volunteers walked on stage already wanting to perform. Nobody was controlled. They consented to the show.

You cannot be hypnotised into doing something that violates your values.

Your subconscious is protective, not gullible.

So, what is the real question you have always wanted to ask about hypnosis?

Drop it below - I will answer everyone.

Most people think smoking is the problem.

In my experience, it usually isn’t.

Smoking is often the strategy.

For some people, the real issue is stress.

Over time, the subconscious mind links stress with relief:

Stress → cigarette → temporary calm.

And eventually that pattern becomes automatic.

That’s why so many intelligent, motivated people struggle to quit, even when they genuinely want to stop.

Because willpower alone doesn’t interrupt the unconscious pattern.

In hypnosis, we work differently.

We create a pause between the trigger and the behaviour.

A moment of space.

A chance for the mind and body to respond differently instead of automatically reaching for a cigarette.

That pause changes everything.

When people learn new ways to regulate stress, the need for smoking often begins to lose its grip.

You don’t need more guilt.

You don’t need more pressure.

You need a different strategy.

If you’re ready to finally break the cycle, I’d be happy to help.

Most smokers don’t actually enjoy ci******es anymore.

They just feel uncomfortable without them.

That’s the part nobody talks about.

It’s not the taste.

It’s not the smell.

It’s not even the habit itself.

It’s the moment before the cigarette.

• The stress spike
• The restlessness
• The feeling that something’s “missing”

So you light up… and it goes away.

For a moment.

After working with smokers for over 15 years in clinical hypnotherapy, I can tell you this:

Ci******es aren’t the addiction.

Relief is.

The brain learns:

“This is how we reset.”

So when people try to quit using willpower, they’re not just giving something up…

They’re removing their fastest coping mechanism.

That’s why it feels so hard.

Not because you’re addicted to ci******es.

Because your mind hasn’t learned another way to switch state.

This is exactly where hypnosis changes things.

We don’t focus on the cigarette.

We focus on what the cigarette does for you.

→ The triggers
→ The associations
→ The internal “reward”

When that shifts, the urge loses its grip.

Not by force.

But because it no longer makes sense to the mind.

I’ve seen people walk out of a single session and say:

“I don’t even feel like one.”

No battle. No white-knuckling. Just… different.

If you’ve ever tried to quit and found yourself going back, you’re not alone.

You were just solving the wrong problem.

What’s the moment that usually makes you reach for a cigarette?

Most people trying to quit cannabis are doing it completely wrong.

They rely on willpower…
They “cut back”…
They tell themselves this time will be different.

And then the same pattern runs again.

Because the habit isn’t logical, it’s subconscious.

After 15+ years as a clinically trained hypnotherapist, I’ve seen the same thing over and over:

When you work at the level of the subconscious mind, change becomes significantly easier and more sustainable.

In one focused session, we target the root cause, not just the habit.
Less internal conflict. Fewer cravings. More control.

And I stand behind my work with lifetime support at no extra cost.

Cannabis is one of the most misunderstood addictions in recovery - and I see it every single day in clinic.

People minimise it. "It's not like ci******es." "It's natural." "I can stop whenever I want." But for the people sitting across from me, it's very real. The anxiety when they try to stop. The sleep that falls apart. The creeping sense that they simply can't relax without it.

The habit isn't the issue. It's what the habit has become - a coping mechanism the brain refuses to give up easily!

This is exactly why clinical hypnosis works. It goes to the source. Not the behaviour, but the patterns underneath it. The subconscious associations that trigger use. The emotional needs the habit has been quietly meeting. The beliefs that make quitting feel impossible.

Willpower gets people started. It rarely gets them across the line.

If cannabis has a tighter grip than you'd like to admit, that's not a character flaw - it's just how habits work. And habits can change! I've helped so many people see this problem in a completely different way, and because they understand what's really happening in their mind, they find the confidence and strength to move forward for good.

What would your life look like six months from now if you were free of it? Call 0408-880-606 and ask for Michael. I'd love to help. Warmly, Michael.

The best time to quit was 20 years ago.

The second best time is today.

Most people stay trapped by one belief: "It's too late for me."

That's not truth. That's the addiction talking.

Switching from ci******es to vapes isn't progress. It's changing seats on the Titanic. Different substance, same habit pattern.

And here's what I've observed working with clients for years:

Hypnotherapy works differently because it targets the psychological root, not just the surface behaviour.

→ Parts negotiation for internal conflicts
→ Timeline work to reframe the habit
→ Customised metaphors for your situation

Whether it's ci******es, vapes, or cannabis, the approach addresses what's underneath. A single session, 2.5 to 3 hours. Lifetime support included.

Your body starts healing within hours. Your mind follows.

The question isn't whether you can quit. It's whether you're ready to start.

If you'd like help understanding what your subconscious is protecting, simply call my Woonona office on 0408 880 606. I look forward to being of service.
