And suddenly it’s all change!
The warm days of late autumn, with birds chattering and the bulbs already sprouting gave way in the blink of an eye to full-on winter.
It was a swift, dramatic change. Suddenly, it’s beanies and roaring fires and rugs on the horses.
There are two types of change. There is change that is forced on us and then change that we choose to initiate. There’s not much we could do to stop the seasons changing but there’s heaps we can do to bring about change in our lives and relationships.
Equine Assisted Learning helps people drive personal change because horses are responsive, emotionally attuned partners who provide immediate, honest feedback. Horses mirror human emotions and behaviour. This allows clients opportunity to reflect on their behaviours and consider what might need to change and why. Clients can practice new ways of communicating, regulate emotions, and solve problems in real time. It’s a space that fosters change through focused reflections. ‘Is there a different way I can approach this ? What if I tried doing this? How about I slow down and take my time? ‘ This creates powerful, experiential learning that traditional approaches often can’t match.
The willingness to try new things, to have a go and not be daunted by failure builds resilience, self-esteem and confidence. The horses are a resource for our Clients as they find their way.
There’s not much we can do to stop the Victorian winter but there’s loads we can do to change ourselves.

We thought this interesting. WE love our horses at H.E.A.L. They are all such characters.

'What would Jenny do?’
Many of us draw inspiration from people we admire and respect. No matter where they come from, by and large, we admire and respect them for their demeanour, presence, can-do attitude and compassion. Sometimes we even adopt their mantras in order to give ourselves the confidence to have a go at things. A mantra that we use at HEAL is ‘Stop- Breathe -Connect’ and many of our clients have adopted it as their own.
However, the other day one of clients told us that they had adopted the mantra ‘What would Jenny do?’ Jenny is our imperious mare, leader of our small herd and an incredible role model with her calm, unflustered manner.
Clients admire the way Jenny manages her personal presence. She has a quiet power that reassures without overwhelming. She moves with purpose and direction. She sends the rest of the herd clear signals of her intentions. Some of our clients see this as an inspiration on how to communicate to others. ‘How to be clear about what I need without being aggressive’.
And yet for all this latent power and purpose, Jenny is quietly sensitive and caring. She accepts approaches from people in a non-judgemental manner and will stand patiently, holding a safe space for them to reflect on their feelings and emotions.
So next time you need to ground yourself and face into something hard- Try to – ‘Stop-Breathe -Connect’ and ask yourself – ‘What would Jenny do?’
