Helping families move forward, not just through court.

Four things about Australian family law that far too many people find out too late. ⚖️

Whether you’re married, in a de facto relationship, recently separated or simply planning for the future, understanding your legal rights matters.

One of the biggest misconceptions? That you need to be divorced before you can sort out your property settlement.

And perhaps the most important thing to remember? There are time limits, and missing them can have serious consequences.

You don’t need to wait until things become complicated to get legal advice.

Save this for later and share it with someone who needs to know.

The way you expect to formalise a financial settlement can change the way you negotiate it.

If you assume Consent Orders are the only option, negotiations very quickly become anchored to one question:

“What would a Court do?”

And suddenly, that starts driving the offers, the expectations and what each person considers a “fair” outcome.

A Binding Financial Agreement can allow for a different conversation which is focused on what the parties are actually prepared to agree is fair, reasonable and workable for them. Fair looks different to different people.

Know all your options before you negotiate. It might change the conversation entirely.

That moment you realise the concerns raised about your client’s mental health may not have been entirely unfounded… 😬

No, I don’t get sick of my job. Every day is different. 😂

We’re very good at avoiding things that make us uncomfortable.

I’m too young.
I’ve got plenty of time.
I’ll do it later.

Avoiding your Will means you don’t have to think about death today.

But if “later” never comes, that discomfort gets handed to your family.

More stress. More uncertainty. More delay. Potentially more legal expense — all while they’re grieving.

Putting it off might make things easier for you now.

But harder for them later.

We need the details. We just don’t need every detail. 🍿

Part of your lawyer’s job is working out what’s important to you — and what’s actually relevant to your case.

Less noise. More relevant facts. Lower legal fees.

One of the easiest ways to help keep your family law costs down? Get organised.

Keep a running chronology as your matter progresses.

Dates. Events. What happened. Relevant messages or documents. Keep it factual and concise.

When your lawyer needs to understand six months of history, prepare an affidavit or respond to an allegation, they have a clear starting point — rather than having to reconstruct it from hundreds of emails and screenshots.

Save your legal fees for the legal work.

Making a Will asks us to contemplate our own mortality. It can mean thinking about what happens to our children without us, who we trust to make decisions, complicated family relationships, and what we want to leave behind.

They’re not particularly comfortable conversations.

And psychologically, avoiding something uncomfortable can make us feel better in the short term — so we tell ourselves we’ll deal with it later.

Maybe the question isn’t simply “Why haven’t I made my Will yet?”

Maybe it’s “What am I avoiding by putting it off?”

You don’t have to be comfortable talking about death to make a Will.

Sometimes, you just have to be willing to have the uncomfortable conversation.

Other kids notice.

They notice when your child arrives at school every Friday with a bag packed for the weekend. And sometimes they ask questions.

Your eight-year-old shouldn’t have to explain the custody arrangement to their friends.

Where it’s financially possible, have the basics at both homes. Clothes. Pyjamas. Toothbrush. School things.

It might seem like a tiny thing to the adults, but removing those little reminders of the separation can make life feel a little more normal for a child moving between two homes.

Obviously, there will always be special items that travel between homes. But your child shouldn’t feel like they’re packing up their life every time they go to Mum or Dad’s.

Children learn to regulate their emotions by watching you (and their other big people) regulate their emotions in the face of stress.. it’s not about smiling and waving and pretending everything is ok. Let them watch you argue/yell/be mad or frustrated and then show them how to regulate yourself and each other. Show them how to find your paddle and pull yourself out of s**t creek 💗
