Low libido? Let's talk about it.

In clinic this week, I had the privilege of chatting with some beautiful women who mentioned in passing that their libido was pretty low.

The thing is, low libido is actually a symptom of something greater going on.

Sometimes that's physiological.
Sometimes it's emotional.
Sometimes it's mental.
Sometimes it's relational.

More often than not, it's a mixed bag of all of the above.

If you're exhausted, iron deficient, touched out, running on cortisol and caffeine, experiencing hormonal changes, dealing with digestive issues, carrying the mental load of an entire household AND quietly resenting your partner because you had to ask them three times to empty the dishwasher...

It's probably worth looking beyond testosterone.

In clinic, some of the areas I might explore include:

• Iron, B12, folate, vitamin D and zinc
• Thyroid function
• Oestrogen, progesterone and androgens where appropriate
• Blood glucose and insulin resistance
• Gut health and nutrient absorption
• Liver health and hormone metabolism
• Sleep and energy
• Stress and nervous system regulation
• Medications that may affect s*xual function
• Vaginal dryness, pelvic health or pain during s*x
• Pregnancy, breastfeeding and perimenopause
• Mental health and emotional wellbeing
• Your relationship, connection and mental load

We also need to talk about the s3x itself.

Do you feel safe and connected? Is s*x enjoyable? Does it hurt? Do you have time to transition out of work/mum/caregiver mode? Is there affection without an expectation that it will lead somewhere? Are you waiting to spontaneously feel desire when your body actually experiences more responsive desire?

There is no single blood test, supplement or herb that explains every woman's libido.

But if yours has noticeably changed, particularly if it's bothering you, I don't think we should dismiss it as "just getting older", "just being a mum" or something you need to push through for your partner.

It's worth getting curious about what your body, your mind and sometimes your relationship might be trying to tell you.

For support in this area, comment CONSULT and I'll send over my booking link.

Cameron Diaz just had her third baby at 53 and says she now feels the pressure to live to 107 - honestly, I think a lot of us can relate to this.

Maybe you started your family later in life and suddenly the idea of healthy ageing feels a whole lot more personal. Or maybe you’re looking at your parents’ generation and noticing how debilitating chronic and complex health conditions can become - it can be scary AF.

My goal isn't to live for as long as I can, I want to live WELL for as long as I can. I want to have energy to keep up with my kids and eventually, maybe my grandkids. I want to stay independent for as long as I can! Stay active! Keep mentally sharp and continue participating in my life actively for as long as possible!

This is where I think holistic healthcare has an incredibly important role to play. We don’t want to wait until enough symptoms have accumulated to give something a diagnosis and *then* start thinking about our health.

We want to pay attention to what the body is telling us along the way.

As much as we can't guarantee the prevention of chronic disease, there are many modifiable factors that influence our risk and our health span and one piece that is often missing from the longevity conversation online is **detoxification**.

We hear plenty about supplements, peptides, NAD+, protein, cold plunges and the latest longevity biohack but your body is already running sophisticated detoxification and elimination processes every single day.

That’s exactly what we’ll be exploring tomorrow in The Dirty Secrets of Longevity Workshop.

Tia Brennan (naturopath & clinical educator) and I will be talking about:

• What your toxic load is and how it may influence healthy ageing
• The hidden impact of “forever chemicals” and other environmental exposures
• Why bile (yes, bile!) is king when it comes to elimination
• The powerful connection between the gut + liver in detoxification
• Practical strategies we use with our clients to support the body's natural detoxification processes and long-term health

Last chance to book today! Comment YES and I'll send the link.

Histaminum is one of those homeopathic remedies that you might start thinking about when allergic, itchy, watery and reactive symptoms dominate the picture.

Think frequent sneezing, watery nasal discharge, itchy or irritated eyes, hives, reactive skin and symptoms that seem to flare following exposure to particular foods, pollen, dust or other environmental triggers.

Unlike some of our more constitutional homeopathic remedies, Histaminum doesn't have a particularly strong emotional or personality picture. Instead, we're generally looking much more closely at the physical presentation and pattern of reactivity.

It’s also important to make the distinction that homeopathic Histaminum isn't the same thing as taking an antihistamine, nor are we using it with the assumption that it simply “lowers histamine”.

As always with homeopathy, the name of the condition isn't enough to choose a remedy. We're looking at the whole symptom picture, the triggers, modalities and what makes that individual presentation unique.

I have a really special place in my heart for postpartum mamas because I know just how hard it can be when you're navigating the trenches of postnatal depletion, sleep deprivation, hormonal chaos and identity shifts.

Last week, I met with a mama who was dealing with all of the above plus managing some birth trauma.

Her mood was low, her energy was low, she was feeling resentful towards her partner and finding it difficult to ask for the support she needed.

We started with a birth debrief and this helped us unpack some of the emotional layers to accurately prescribe some homeopathics.

Next up, we considered nutritional deficits and discussed what a healing nutritional plan would look like alongside some much-needed supplementation (in this case).

We also took some time to check baby's latch and made some adjustments to minimise air intake which was contributing to colicky symptoms and discussed the potential need for chiro or osteo to support some tension in baby's neck. I also put together a personalised prescription of homeopathics to support baby's tummy.

I checked in with this mama 2 days after our consult and she shared that she was feeling much better! Baby's tummy had been more settled and able to get more sleep. She was feeling more balanced after a huge emotional release about the birth.

We'll be checking in again in a couple of weeks to see how she's feeling and make appropriate tweaks to her treatment plan.

What's the one thing my clients always comment on when working with me is how their skin has improved.

Normally, it's not the focus when they present with me but it's always a very welcome side effect of cleaning things up and optimising their gut health.

This weekend, Tia Brennan from Health on the Hill and I will be chatting about all things healthy aging and longevity during a 1 hour workshop at TMP Organics.

Tickets are just $10 and we'd love to see you there so we can chat about how detoxification, longevity and even skin health intertwines

When we purchased TMP Organic Butcher & Supermarket earlier this year, I thought I had a really thorough understanding of organic meat protocols and processes...boy, was it just the surface!

We've learnt so much over the last 6 months and tbh, it's been very eye opening to see how others label and promote their meat.

There's very little restrictions around what can be labelled "organic" so as an example, if you're purchasing "organic" sausages... you might find that it contains organic meat but the casings, fillers, herbs and spices are not organic. In some cases, they contain preservatives or even MSG.

Free-range is another loose term. Most of us imagine animals frollicking in a paddock but the reality is, they can still be in very close quarters and have incredibly limited access to sun and pasture.

If you choose to include animal products in your diet, I believe that you should really try to invest in the best quality that you can afford because it does have a knock on effect to your health, environment and sustainability of the meat industry.

I understand that this is a privilege which is why we offer amazing bulk rates that are open to buying groups and co-ops. We find that this is one of the most affordable ways for families to access really high-quality meat.

Why I routinely detox a few times a year…

When we talk about longevity, we often focus on what we need to add - more nutrients, more exercise, more supplements and even more peptides.

However, I feel that many people are putting the cart before the horse with this.

Our bodies have sophisticated detoxification systems working every day to keep our body as safe as possible.
The liver transforms compounds so they can be eliminated.
The kidneys filter the blood.
The gut and bowel help remove waste.
Our lungs, skin and lymphatic system all play their part too.

What's important to note is that:
- These system rely on adequate nutrients, hydration, healthy digestion, regular elimination, movement and good metabolic health to work properly.
- Modern toxic load is much heavier than our body was ever designed for as we're now bombarded by EMFs and toxins from aerial sprays, clothes, food, furniture, personal care products and even our water.

Many detox naysayers will tell you that the body will detox itself and if it doesn't, you have a problem. This is true but it misses the integral part that our body needs specific support to help navigate the sheer load we deal with day to day.

As a gut health specialist, this is one of the areas I specialise in and I truly believe that it's one of the key pillars of longevity and healthy aging.

If this is something you're interested in learning more about, you might like to join our in-person longevity workshop with naturopath & clinical educator, Tia Brennan at TMP Organics - North Brisbane. Comment YES and I'll send you the details.
