One of the biggest myths about va**ng is that people continue because they enjoy it.

In reality, many people are caught between two competing thoughts:

"I want to stop."

And...

"I'll quit later."

That internal conversation can go on for months, sometimes years.

Recently, I had the opportunity to join Christian and Bella on the i98FM morning show to discuss va**ng, smoking addiction, and why intelligent, motivated people often find themselves stuck in habits they genuinely want to change.

This short clip touches on some of the psychology behind that struggle.

A huge thank you to Christian, Bella and the i98FM team for making me feel so welcome.

I'd love to hear your thoughts:

Do you think va**ng is harder to quit than smoking ci******es, or easier?

"Can you hypnotise me against my will?"

I get asked this almost every week.

The short answer is no.

The long answer is more interesting.

Hypnosis is not something done TO you.

It is something done WITH you.

In fact, all hypnosis is technically self-hypnosis. My job as a clinician is to guide you into a state your brain already knows how to enter.

You do it every day without realising:

→ When you drive home and cannot remember the last 10 minutes
→ When you are completely lost in a book or film
→ When you scroll your phone and 40 minutes vanish
→ When you daydream in the shower and miss what someone said

That focused, absorbed state IS hypnosis.

The difference in my clinic is that we use it on purpose. With intention. To address something specific - anxiety, smoking, insomnia, fears, confidence, pain.

But here is what most people miss:

Hypnosis is a partnership, not a performance.

It requires three things to actually work:

1. You trust the practitioner
2. The practitioner genuinely listens to what YOU want to change
3. You do the homework between sessions

Skip any of those, and it falls flat.

The stage hypnotists you have seen on TV? Those volunteers walked on stage already wanting to perform. Nobody was controlled. They consented to the show.

You cannot be hypnotised into doing something that violates your values.

Your subconscious is protective, not gullible.

So, what is the real question you have always wanted to ask about hypnosis?

Drop it below - I will answer everyone.

Most people think smoking is the problem.

In my experience, it usually isn’t.

Smoking is often the strategy.

For some people, the real issue is stress.

Over time, the subconscious mind links stress with relief:

Stress → cigarette → temporary calm.

And eventually that pattern becomes automatic.

That’s why so many intelligent, motivated people struggle to quit, even when they genuinely want to stop.

Because willpower alone doesn’t interrupt the unconscious pattern.

In hypnosis, we work differently.

We create a pause between the trigger and the behaviour.

A moment of space.

A chance for the mind and body to respond differently instead of automatically reaching for a cigarette.

That pause changes everything.

When people learn new ways to regulate stress, the need for smoking often begins to lose its grip.

You don’t need more guilt.

You don’t need more pressure.

You need a different strategy.

If you’re ready to finally break the cycle, I’d be happy to help.

Most smokers don’t actually enjoy ci******es anymore.

They just feel uncomfortable without them.

That’s the part nobody talks about.

It’s not the taste.

It’s not the smell.

It’s not even the habit itself.

It’s the moment before the cigarette.

• The stress spike
• The restlessness
• The feeling that something’s “missing”

So you light up… and it goes away.

For a moment.

After working with smokers for over 15 years in clinical hypnotherapy, I can tell you this:

Ci******es aren’t the addiction.

Relief is.

The brain learns:

“This is how we reset.”

So when people try to quit using willpower, they’re not just giving something up…

They’re removing their fastest coping mechanism.

That’s why it feels so hard.

Not because you’re addicted to ci******es.

Because your mind hasn’t learned another way to switch state.

This is exactly where hypnosis changes things.

We don’t focus on the cigarette.

We focus on what the cigarette does for you.

→ The triggers
→ The associations
→ The internal “reward”

When that shifts, the urge loses its grip.

Not by force.

But because it no longer makes sense to the mind.

I’ve seen people walk out of a single session and say:

“I don’t even feel like one.”

No battle. No white-knuckling. Just… different.

If you’ve ever tried to quit and found yourself going back, you’re not alone.

You were just solving the wrong problem.

What’s the moment that usually makes you reach for a cigarette?

Most people trying to quit cannabis are doing it completely wrong.

They rely on willpower…
They “cut back”…
They tell themselves this time will be different.

And then the same pattern runs again.

Because the habit isn’t logical, it’s subconscious.

After 15+ years as a clinically trained hypnotherapist, I’ve seen the same thing over and over:

When you work at the level of the subconscious mind, change becomes significantly easier and more sustainable.

In one focused session, we target the root cause, not just the habit.
Less internal conflict. Fewer cravings. More control.

And I stand behind my work with lifetime support at no extra cost.

The best time to quit was 20 years ago.

The second best time is today.

Most people stay trapped by one belief: "It's too late for me."

That's not truth. That's the addiction talking.

Switching from ci******es to vapes isn't progress. It's changing seats on the Titanic. Different substance, same habit pattern.

And here's what I've observed working with clients for years:

Hypnotherapy works differently because it targets the psychological root, not just the surface behaviour.

→ Parts negotiation for internal conflicts
→ Timeline work to reframe the habit
→ Customised metaphors for your situation

Whether it's ci******es, vapes, or cannabis, the approach addresses what's underneath. A single session, 2.5 to 3 hours. Lifetime support included.

Your body starts healing within hours. Your mind follows.

The question isn't whether you can quit. It's whether you're ready to start.

Anxiety isn't the problem. It's the messenger.

Most people spend years trying to silence their anxiety. Avoiding it. Pushing it down. Hoping it'll just go away.

But here's what I've observed in 15 years of clinical practice:

Anxiety drops dramatically the moment someone actually listens to what it's trying to communicate.

Every feeling has a purpose. It's not there to punish you.

In clinical hypnotherapy, we guide clients into what's called an Alpha state. A peaceful, focused state where the analytical mind steps aside.

This is where the real work happens.

Not because I have power over the client. I don't. No one does.

It's because both parts of the mind are finally working together, focused on one specific goal: the client's goal.

Here's the protocol I use with clients:

→ Stop when anxiety appears
→ Lean into the feeling instead of avoiding it
→ Ask what this emotion is trying to communicate

The subconscious mind has been storing these messages, often for years. Sometimes decades.

When we access that stored emotional memory through hypnosis and actually listen, something shifts.

The feeling dissipates. Not because we've suppressed it, but because it's delivered its message.

The anxiety was never the enemy. It was trying to protect you.

Once you understand that, change doesn't have to take years.

Sometimes it happens in a heartbeat.

What's your relationship with anxiety? Are you fighting it or listening to it?

"Hypnosis didn't work on me."

I hear this at least once a week from people who call my Woonona office.

And honestly? I get it!

If your only reference point is stage hypnosis or a generic script read over calming music, I'd be sceptical too.

Here's why hypnosis fails for many people:

Stage hypnosis expectations. You've seen someone cluck like a chicken on stage and think that's what therapy looks like. It's not! Stage 'hypnotists' are entertainers who select extroverts wanting attention and give them permission to be silly. Clinical hypnotherapy is a completely different practice.

One-size-fits-all scripts. A recording can't identify your unique patterns, beliefs, or triggers. Real change requires understanding what's driving the behaviour in the first place!

No clinical formulation. Without addressing secondary gains (what the habit is protecting you from) or building a relapse plan, change rarely sticks.

What I do differently: I start with a thorough intake to understand your specific patterns and beliefs. Then I create tailored suggestions that work with your subconscious mind, not against it. We reinforce change with practical tools and follow-up support.

And here's what hypnosis actually feels like: focused and aware. Like being absorbed in a good book. You're not unconscious. You're not under mind control. You're in a partnership where both parts of your mind work together on your goal!

Hypnotherapy requires three things: you trusting me, me genuinely listening to what you want, and you doing the work between sessions. Simple!

What's your biggest concern about hypnosis? I'll answer without judgment. Call my Woonona office on 0408 880 606, warmly, Michael

What 15 Years of Clinical Hypnotherapy Has Taught Me About the Power of the Subconscious

Several years ago, a client I’ll call Samantha came to see me for help with va**ng.

She did exceptionally well and stopped.

What mattered more than the result, however, was the trust that followed.

A year or two later, Samantha returned. This time, her focus was different. She was engaged, planning her wedding, and wanted to reach her ideal weight - not out of pressure, but because she wanted to feel confident and comfortable as she stepped into the next chapter of her life.

Once again, she achieved exactly what she set out to do.

Then, about a year later, she contacted me again - this time pregnant.

Her intention was clear. She wanted a calm, relaxed, and peaceful birthing experience. She wanted reassurance at a subconscious level that her body already knew what to do. That it knew how to create calm, how to trust the process, and how to work with her rather than against her.

One detail has stayed with me ever since.

Her doctors had suggested a due date around Christmas Day. Samantha didn’t want that. In her words, she felt the child would be disadvantaged having a Christmas birthday. She said the 18th of December “just felt right”.

That was her focus.

On Boxing Day 2025, I received a message from her:
“A healthy, happy baby boy was born on the 18th of December. Thank you.”

As a clinical hypnotherapist with over 15 years’ experience, moments like this still stop me in my tracks.

Years ago, I might have taken this as a personal win - “I did this.”
But that simply isn’t true.

My role has never been to create change for my clients.
My role is to help them reconnect with their own power - and trust what they already know, often at a level deeper than conscious thought.

The subconscious is extraordinary when it is given clarity, permission, and direction.

I feel genuinely blessed to have found a career I love - one that allows me to help people step into the next level of their lives, whatever that may look like for them.

If you’re ready to explore what you are capable of, I’d love to have that conversation.
