🥩 Everyone’s talking about protein… but Australia’s biggest nutrition gap might surprise you.

The latest ABS data shows:

🥦 Only 4.3% of Australians meet the recommended vegetable intake.

🥩 Around 20.6% meet the recommendations for lean meats and alternatives.

Protein is important—but adding another protein bar or shake may not be the biggest opportunity for better health.

Instead, try adding one extra serve of vegetables to a meal you already enjoy.

Sometimes the biggest nutrition win isn’t buying another supplement—it’s improving the plate that’s already in front of you.

💬 What’s your favourite easy way to eat more vegetables?

Not every diabetes "hack" you see online deserves your attention.

These five are supported by research, inexpensive and practical enough for real life.

Managing diabetes isn't about finding one miracle solution.

It's about building small habits that make a difference over time.

đź’¬ Which one could you try this week?

15/07/2026

đź’™ "Have you tried this miracle cure?"

It's a question many people living with diabetes hear far too often.

Every day, social media promises quick fixes—supplements that claim to reverse diabetes, miracle foods that supposedly melt away insulin resistance, and influencers offering simple answers to complex health conditions.

The reality is that genuine breakthroughs don't happen overnight.

The advances improving diabetes care today—new medications, continuous glucose monitoring, better nutrition strategies and a deeper understanding of the condition—are the result of years of research, rigorous clinical trials and the experiences of thousands of people living with diabetes.

That doesn't make for a sensational headline, but it does make for better healthcare.

This National Diabetes Week, let's celebrate evidence, question extraordinary claims and recognise the researchers, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes who continue to drive real progress.

Because your health deserves more than viral advice.

It deserves information you can trust.

đź’¬ What's the most unbelievable diabetes or nutrition claim you've seen online?

💙 “Should you be eating that?”

It’s one of the most common questions people living with diabetes hear—and one of the most frustrating.

Most people mean well, but comments about someone else’s food can leave them feeling judged, embarrassed or misunderstood.

The reality is that diabetes management is personal. Food choices are influenced by many factors, including blood glucose levels, medications, physical activity, appetite, culture and personal preferences. No one food tells you how well someone is managing their diabetes.

This National Diabetes Week, let’s replace food policing with understanding.

Instead of commenting on someone’s plate, ask how they’re going. Listen to their experience. Offer support rather than advice.

Small changes in the way we speak can make a big difference.

💬 Have you ever had someone comment on your food because of diabetes? What do you wish they’d said instead?

đź’™ National Diabetes Week | Living Out Loud

What I wish people understood about living with diabetes…

Living with diabetes is about so much more than sugar and food.

It’s making daily decisions about blood glucose levels, medications, physical activity, work, family, stress, sleep and food. It’s navigating advice from well-meaning family, friends and social media while trying to do what’s right for your own health.

This National Diabetes Week, we’re proud to support the Living Out Loud campaign by helping to build understanding, reduce stigma and share practical, evidence-based nutrition advice.

Throughout the week, we’ll be busting common myths, answering frequently asked questions and sharing realistic nutrition strategies that support better health—without guilt, fear or unnecessary food rules.

Whether you’re living with diabetes, supporting someone who is, or simply want to learn more, we invite you to follow along.

💬 What do you wish more people understood about living with diabetes? Share your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear from you.

These statistics surprised me more than they should have.

More people than ever are turning to social media for nutrition advice, often receiving information from people with limited nutrition training or from those promoting a one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness.

The challenge is that our nutrition needs are as individual as our fingerprints. Our health conditions, medications, lifestyle, food preferences, gut microbiome, goals and budget all influence what is right for us.

A dietitian is trained to look beyond a single symptom, food, trend or social media recommendation. We consider the whole person to develop an individualised plan that supports overall health. Just as importantly, we help people make changes that are safe, practical, evidence-based and sustainable—supporting health not just for the next few weeks, but across a lifetime.

❓How do you decide whether nutrition advice online is trustworthy?

02/03/2026

When people hear “inflammation”, they often think of one food to remove.

But chronic inflammation is rarely about a single ingredient.

It’s influenced by patterns:
• sleep quality
• stress load
• body fat distribution
• meal regularity
• fibre diversity

If you’re feeling tired, inflamed or unsettled, extreme restriction usually isn’t the answer.

Structure is.

Before starting another elimination plan, get clarity on what’s actually driving it.

• Low protein intake
• Nutrient deficiencies
• Fatigue

Weight loss shouldn’t cost you lean body mass.

The fix?
✔️ Protein at every meal
✔️ Small, regular meals
✔️ Gradual fibre increases
✔️ Strength training

Medication is a tool.
