Hello! It’s Kathryn here - as your local pharmacist I give out health advice nearly every day of the week & I’ve often wondered how is the best way to give advice out en mass, and if I had an audience what would that advice be?
Considering it’s October & breast cancer awareness month, I thought I’d test the powers of social media & do my bit to raise awareness. Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer - a grandmother, mother, sister or friend … and the kicker is, & what we often forget is, it can target men also.
Breast cancer is unfortunately common - statistics say that 1 in 7 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the time they are 85. So next time you walk down the street (on your way to the pharmacy of course 😉) count how many people you see ….then do the maths.
1 in 7 or 12% - That’s how common it’s becoming. That’s potentially over 755 people in Wynyard alone.
But is it becoming common because we can diagnose it earlier & treat it earlier? Or is it that we are more aware? Probably a question for another chat as I’m sure you’ve nearly had enough of my ramblings.
So, let’s leave it with this - this month set yourself a task if you haven’t already done so - check your breasts! If you’re unsure how, go to https://www.bcna.org.au/resources/screening-and-diagnosis/how-to-check-your-breasts &, if you’re eligible, book in your breast screen via https://www.cancer.org.au/cancer-information/screening-tests-and-treatments/early-detection-and-screening/breast-cancer-screening . This link also has links to other cancer services & checks - & yes, there are other screens available also - lungs, prostate, bowel & cervical to name a few. Don’t be shy - get in there!
Cancer council are also instore each month - a free service - so come see them!
Just remember also - that yes, over 50’s you get free mammogram reminders. But were you aware, if you’re over 40 you are still eligible for free mammograms - you just don’t get the reminders …but that’s what smart phones are for surely??
