Now that Yallourn North Action Group [YNAG] or another Yallourn North township group is free to act in a leadership position again, to promote Yallourn North residents' interests - there is no need coming into 2025, for a separate group like Living Well Yallourn North Inc. - that focuses on health and well-being issues only. Living Well Yallourn North Inc is now closing. Our job is done.
A township group that already receives assistance from Latrobe City Council to cover its insurance costs, can easily manage health, and well-being issues, as part of the main group's objectives, using a specified sub-committee. Insurance cost alone for a separate community group like LWYN [which gets no council funding support for its operational costs] is prohibitive, at around $1500 per year.
Living Well Yallourn North Inc was established in Feb 2023, in response to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Promotional Office [MHWPO - VicHealth] survey of Victorian towns in 2021 and 2022 - a project that was designed to identify how towns perceived their levels of health and wellbeing - and what they needed to lift those levels if required. Yallourn North residents responded to a community call-out to complete the survey. Based on resident responses there was a significant need to improve health and well-being so Living Well Yallourn North Inc was established.
LWYN Inc had a very productive and successful year in 2023 - with committee members working actively in various Latrobe Valley community activities, including Healthy You Day; running awareness-raising projects such as the GoodSam campaign to train citizens in CPR, and International Overdose Awareness Day.
LWYN Inc received funding for various significant local projects such as Mental Health First Aid [MHFA Australia] courses where the maximum class sizes of 24 were reached for all three courses. This meant that as many local people benefited as was possible, within the funding guidelines. Class sizes were seen as a record "turn-out" for course registrations, comparing other group response rates.
LWYN Inc also took part in a "Raising Bees Awareness" project and other activities for Permaculture Week, in conjunction with Food for All Latrobe Valley and Latrobe Valley Beekeepers' Association. We were funded by Latrobe Health Assembly and Latrobe Community Health Service. These projects promoted "Bee-Friendly Plants" to over 600 Yallourn North residents, and attracted over 150 community members to lunch prepared by multicultural cooks from International Women's Group, to see "Permaculture in Action".
From 2022, our Township leadership group - Yallourn North Action Group Inc had closed for business pending a legal case outcome - so LWYN Inc helped to "fill the breach" in any way possible, to ensure that Yallourn North residents still felt supported. We look forward to a successful 2025, with our township group re-opening if possible. Yallourn North residents need and deserve active representation. We are all losing out by not actively working.
As residents - and as members of Yallourn North Action Group, LWYN Inc members now hope to continue with our work to raise awareness of health and wellbeing issues for Yallourn North, while inspiring more people to join Yallourn North's township group - no matter what group represents our town.
Thank you to everyone who encouraged LWYN Inc and helped us to succeed in 2023 and 2024. It has been a great experience.
