Living WELL Yallourn North - LWYN

Living WELL Yallourn North - LWYN Living Well Yallourn North Inc - an Incorporated Association, about Health, and Community Well Being. Mostly - we have fun!

Established in February 2023, Living Well Yallourn North Inc [LWYN] is a volunteer-driven grassroots community group, working in Victoria's Latrobe Valley. LWYN is wholly focused on lifting levels of health and well-being. It seeks to promote Living Well Latrobe's [Latrobe City] and other regional health service providers' objectives while listening to residents, to meet our health and wellbeing n

eeds. We work together as community change-makers within our collective Latrobe Valley health and wellbeing network, by sharing information, supporting other groups' initiatives, and holding socially inclusive learning events.

Even though Living Well Yallourn North Inc [LWYN] has now closed as a legal non-profit entity, we are all still actively volunteering through bigger Latrobe Valley groups. Association insurance was hefty, and we could work more cost-effectively through other established community associations, so we kissed dear Lucy LWYN a fond farewell - and we have carried her message further. We have decided to keep our page open as a record of what we achieved together in our busy 19 months or so of operation.

Our picture and album gallery are testaments to our achievements that will still carry the spirit of Lucy and LWYN Inc into the future.

Celebrating Permaculture in Latrobe Valley - Sunday 23 March 2025 - a great day out where permaculture experts and multicultural cooks all worked together to feed us and inform us about how to live more sustainably. Here, Judy Stewart is showing us how to make wicking beds - using such handy items as old recycled milk containers! xx Incredibly doable when we are shown how!

LWYN In is not operating anymore, but Lucy LWYN is still helping to spread good news. Food For ALL Latrobe Valley and the Latrobe Valley Beekeepers Association invite us all to come along and bring the kids to Moe for a great day out - 23 March 2025. Book NOW [see the flyer] for your FREE lunch! Enjoy free morning and afternoon tea - and have a fun day chatting and learning while Queen Sweetie entertains the kids!

See how to make a wicking bed, a worm farm, and an edible forest, or pedal your way to your favorite fruit smoothie on the blender bike and be inspired to create unique wearable art out of upcycled textiles.

Our thanks go to Latrobe Health Assembly for funding this exciting event; to Moe Neighbourhood House MNH for printing and other help; and to the wonderful multicultural cooking team at International Womens Group.

Now that Yallourn North Action Group [YNAG] or another Yallourn North township group is free to act in a leadership position again, to promote Yallourn North residents' interests - there is no need coming into 2025, for a separate group like Living Well Yallourn North Inc. - that focuses on health and well-being issues only. Living Well Yallourn North Inc is now closing. Our job is done.

A township group that already receives assistance from Latrobe City Council to cover its insurance costs, can easily manage health, and well-being issues, as part of the main group's objectives, using a specified sub-committee. Insurance cost alone for a separate community group like LWYN [which gets no council funding support for its operational costs] is prohibitive, at around $1500 per year.

Living Well Yallourn North Inc was established in Feb 2023, in response to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Promotional Office [MHWPO - VicHealth] survey of Victorian towns in 2021 and 2022 - a project that was designed to identify how towns perceived their levels of health and wellbeing - and what they needed to lift those levels if required. Yallourn North residents responded to a community call-out to complete the survey. Based on resident responses there was a significant need to improve health and well-being so Living Well Yallourn North Inc was established.

LWYN Inc had a very productive and successful year in 2023 - with committee members working actively in various Latrobe Valley community activities, including Healthy You Day; running awareness-raising projects such as the GoodSam campaign to train citizens in CPR, and International Overdose Awareness Day.

LWYN Inc received funding for various significant local projects such as Mental Health First Aid [MHFA Australia] courses where the maximum class sizes of 24 were reached for all three courses. This meant that as many local people benefited as was possible, within the funding guidelines. Class sizes were seen as a record "turn-out" for course registrations, comparing other group response rates.

LWYN Inc also took part in a "Raising Bees Awareness" project and other activities for Permaculture Week, in conjunction with Food for All Latrobe Valley and Latrobe Valley Beekeepers' Association. We were funded by Latrobe Health Assembly and Latrobe Community Health Service. These projects promoted "Bee-Friendly Plants" to over 600 Yallourn North residents, and attracted over 150 community members to lunch prepared by multicultural cooks from International Women's Group, to see "Permaculture in Action".

From 2022, our Township leadership group - Yallourn North Action Group Inc had closed for business pending a legal case outcome - so LWYN Inc helped to "fill the breach" in any way possible, to ensure that Yallourn North residents still felt supported. We look forward to a successful 2025, with our township group re-opening if possible. Yallourn North residents need and deserve active representation. We are all losing out by not actively working.

As residents - and as members of Yallourn North Action Group, LWYN Inc members now hope to continue with our work to raise awareness of health and wellbeing issues for Yallourn North, while inspiring more people to join Yallourn North's township group - no matter what group represents our town.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged LWYN Inc and helped us to succeed in 2023 and 2024. It has been a great experience.
[Living Well Yallourn North Inc committee].

IMPORTANT MESSAGE - Here's the link to watch the Latrobe Valley "Meet the Candidate" session TONIGHT at 6.30pm - at Newborough Bowling Club! It is free and ALL welcome!

Just use the link below to tune in live online OR have the link to watch later. [You will need Microsoft TEAMS downloaded first.]

If your favoured candidate is NOT attending - Then treat that as a red flag perhaps. It is all the more reason why you should watch online if you cannot get to the free meeting at Newborough Bowling Club. 6.30 for 6.55pm start and scheduled until around 8pm.

It is time to show ALL of our candidates that we DO care and that we DO want to engage with them more widely. THEY need to help US by stepping "into the ring" - instead of just talking about it.

If they can try to BAN gambling casinos in Malaysia then we should follow their good example. Here's hoping that it can be done.

I am sick of hearing how Nuclear Power can bring Jobs, Jobs Jobs!! It is time to GET REAL.

Latrobe Valley is ALREADY losing 522 jobs annually from poker machines - and God only knows how many $$$ are leaving Latrobe Valley via "telephone/online gambling" that puts a betting shop and casino in every young bloke's pocket.

I am also sick of hearing the BS that "the government needs poker machines" It does NOT! It LOSES from poker machines. AND - Australia LOSES an estimated 200,000 new jobs EVERY year because of pokies alone!
WHY are we ignoring that well-researched fact?

The state PAS deputy commissioner Andansura Rabu says, however, they will comply with the law on the type of action that can be taken.
