HAIR LOSS - Causes & Treatment options
Hair loss can be genetic in both s*xes, but hair thinning or shedding is a very common complaint, especially in peri/menopausal women 👩🦰
Some of the CAUSES include:
* Stress, trauma, post partum
- contributing to lack of sleep and high cortisol levels
* Nutrient deficiencies- particularly low iron stores, low Vit D, B12, or zinc
* Insufficient protein intake- amino acids are the building blocks for our hair
* Autoimmune conditions- especially Hashimoto's/hypothyroiditis, & Lupus
* Hormonal imbalances such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) & amenorrhoea (lack of menstruation), androgen excess.
* Rapid weight loss leading to nutrient deficiencies or being undernourished
* Certain medications such as the oral contraceptive pill, beta blockers, and statin drugs
* Excessive alcohol consumption & smoking increase inflammation and decrease circulation to hair follicles
TREATMENT OPTIONS:
It may take up to 3 months for hair to regrow with the right treatments so be patient!
Try the following;
👉 Wash hair regularly (at least 3 x week) to prevent oil building up and yeast overgrowth on the scalp which slows hair growth
👉 Massage your scalp when shampooing to stimulate circulation and hair follicle regrowth
👉 Rub Rosemary essential oil into the scalp to further stimulate circulation to the hair follicles
👉 Certain anti-dandruff shampoos can help kill fungal overgrowth on the scalp, which can cause hair loss/damage
👉 Going gluten-free (and maybe dairy-free), can help some people, especially if you have an autoimmune condition
👉 Ensure you are eating adequate quality protein with each meal- aim for 30g per meal
👉 Post partum ladies should supplement with collagen peptides, iron and zinc
👉 Red light therapy on the scalp can be effective in improving circulation to hair follicles
👉 Microneedling, PRP and laser treatment may help also if other treatments fail.
