Recent evidence based research reveals measurable changes in the body during an acupuncture treatment, creating more awareness on this ancient practice. National Geographic’s article explores the science behind acupuncture, a Traditional Chinese medicine modality which involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the body’s healing mechanism. According to research, acupuncture may relieve pain by stimulating connective tissue, activating the nervous system and changing how the brain processes pain.

Studies suggest that acupuncture triggers the measurable physiological responses, including the release of adenosine, a powerful natural painkiller, and changes brain activity. Acupuncture demonstrates a place in healthcare for pain relief.

Many scientists have dismissed acupuncture as little more than a placebo, but advanced imaging and clinical research reveal measurable changes in the body during treatment. As the evidence continues to grow, experts are rethinking where this ancient practice belongs in modern pain relief.

A (very) brief history of Traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an ancient medical practice developed more than 2,000 years ago. The first medical text, Huang di nei Jing (Yellow’s Emperor’s Classic on Internal medicine) was written approx. 220BC, which describes human physiological conditions of health and disease from a holistic perspective.

The principals and teachings from the first ancient text are still relevant to today’s clinical practice and has set a precedence of knowledge for specialist areas, such as gynaecology, digestive disorders, paediatrics, general wellbeing etc.

Traditional Chinese medicine is now seen as an adjunctive or standalone medicine for various health conditions, not limited to fertility, gynaecological diseases, digestive disorders, dermatological conditions, mental and emotional wellbeing.

In 2007, the World Health Organisation (WHO) now recognise traditional medicine and its terminology, as a step towards further integrating TCM and globalising traditional medicine. This is due to the growing popularity of traditional medicine and its clinical effectiveness for so many conditions.
