Before feeding processed and concentrated food to our pets was a common occurrence, our pets lived healthier lives.

The transition from Winter to Spring creates changes for horses that need to be managed.
Moving from the coldest time of the year to longer days, sunshine, pasture species coming out of dormancy and hormonal fluctuations and metabolism changes being triggered….this is the time to take advantage and stock up on pure, bioavailable, non synthetic herbal extracts.

I’ve been MIA for a little while now, as almost 3 weeks ago I underwent pelvic reconstructive surgery.
The months leading up to this were sheer craziness, with a booked out Canine Clinic, busy human treatment room, horse treatments, herbal formulas and orders, classes and an evening presentation slotted in!
It was a little insane….although most of you know that I kind of like living this way too 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have had to spend the past few weeks sleeping, resting, generally being well cared for by my family who have put a roster in place to care for me 🤦🏽‍♀️ and my fabulous dogs have been also nursing me. 🐩🐩

I am spending time sitting outside, watching our sheep, twin lambs, the horses, and the cattle.
I have had many gentle strolls through my veggie patch, that I am 3 weeks away from pottering in, and 10 - 11 weeks away from digging and working heavily in.

OMG….what a challenge! 😳
Talk about going from one extreme to the other!

I’m eating the most healing foods and incorporating the 5 element (TCM) nutrition theory that I share with my patients, and I’m incorporating herbal medicine and breath work to boost my healing capacity.

An enormous thank you to everyone for their patience while I’m out of action, and to everyone who has checked in on me.

I had listed my canine clinic return for the 23rd of September, however I will be reopening on the 16th of September and will be reopening human treatments soon after.
Horse treatments won’t resume until early November and all orders from the online shop have been moving along as usual.

I will also be available for online and phone consults from next week.

Although I always seek out natural and holistic treatments, in some cases surgical intervention is needed, as it was in my case.

I can say that I actually feel great and am practicing being compliant, exactly the way I hope my 2 and 4 legged patients are when they are in recovery.

There are currently 41% of dogs in Australia that are overweight or obese.
What most owners don’t realise, is that excess fatty tissue triggers low grade inflammation of the body, and also in the brain.
This results in the disruption of stress hormone levels that control the emotions of our dogs.
When anxiety, frustration and sadness occurs, as a result of this, we have the opportunity to manage the weight and reverse these symptoms.
Furthermore, dogs suffering from excess weight and obesity are at higher risk of joint disease, and the additional strain placed on their organ systems, can reduce their life expectancy by up to two years!
The treatment is simple, and cost effective.
Rather than to offer numerous supplements, a treatment plan including reassessing the diet (I suggest doing this seasonally and also from a TCM- Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective) seeing your canine health professional to ensure there are no contributing factors that need addressing, incorporating regularly exercise and rehab exercises, (advised by your canine professional) as well as regular bodywork to aid range of motion, and checking with your canine practitioner whether your dog would benefit from herbal supplement support.
I see a large number of overweight and anxious dogs in our clinic, and owners who gather products to ease the anxiety and reduce weight.
Once your dog has been cleared of any other factors that need addressing, it’s time to start at the beginning…with diet and to make your way through the list.
It’s time to raise the life expectancy of our dogs, so we can love them for longer,

Every year owners worry about Spring and the risk of issues associated with Spring grass, but Winter is when I start seeing horses suffering.

Over the past few weeks I’ve seen numerous horses and heard from a large number of owners, with horses suffering from symptoms associated with the Winter pasture, over feeding, over rugging and over supplementing.

While many owners are exceptional, and put protocols into action the moment they are aware of the dangers, every year I hear the same phrases from many owners who are yet to experience the horrendous health struggles their horses will encounter once it’s too late.

The most common phrases I hear are -
“My horse is getting nothing and there’s no grass”
“My horse has been much fatter than this in the past”
“There’s no heat in the feet and my horse isn’t even fat”
“I’m using a product to keep my horse safe so I don’t need to worry”
“You have no idea how my horse looks at me…I have no choice, I have to feed him his favourite feed”

Hearing the frustration from the farriers in my family and seeing horses suffer from these conditions over the years, and hearing these comments can be excruciatingly frustrating….because I want your horse to be happy and healthy.

That’s the bottom line…there’s nothing more to it.

Because there is much to be said on this subject, I have written an article (as it was too long for social media) outlining what happens to the pasture when the mercury drops and how you can be prepared.

Please, please, please….start now, because I know you can do it.

How do I know???

Because once horses start displaying symptoms and the outlook doesn’t look good for them, their owners have the ability to go above and beyond to save them.

Let’s not allow our horses to reach that stage.
