🩸 DID YOU KNOW? MPN is not one specific disease. MPN stands for myeloproliferative neoplasm, which is the name for a group of blood cancers where the bone marrow makes too many or abnormal blood cells.

Think of MPN as the umbrella, with several different diseases underneath it. Three of the main MPNs are:

🔴 PV — Polycythemia Vera: Mainly causes too many red blood cells, although white blood cells and platelets can also be elevated. This can increase the risk of blood clots.

🟡 ET — Essential Thrombocythemia: Causes the bone marrow to produce too many platelets. People can have an increased risk of clotting and, sometimes, bleeding.

⚪ MF — Myelofibrosis: Causes abnormal blood-cell production and scarring of the bone marrow, which can interfere with its ability to make healthy blood cells.

PV, ET and MF are related blood cancers, but they are not the same disease. PV and ET can sometimes progress to myelofibrosis, called post-PV MF or post-ET MF, but many patients never experience this progression.

MPNs are commonly associated with mutations such as JAK2, CALR and MPL, and each person's disease can behave differently.
