The Spine Isn’t Always the Source of Your Pain, It May Be the Nerves
While cervical radiculopathy (a pinched nerve in the cervical spine) is a common cause of neck and arm pain, not every case can be explained by MRI findings. Mild disc bulges are common and may be unrelated to symptoms.
In some patients, the real cause may be a problem in the brachial plexus—a network of nerves that travels from the neck through the shoulder and arm. Rare conditions such as nerve sheath tumors can mimic a pinched nerve, causing worsening pain, numbness, weakness, and even swelling or skin color changes.
Warning signs that deserve further evaluation include:
• Pain or numbness involving the entire hand or arm
• Swelling, temperature sensitivity, or skin color changes
• Progressive frozen shoulder
• Symptoms that continue despite treatment
When symptoms don’t match imaging findings or fail to improve, a more detailed evaluation and specialized imaging may be needed. An accurate diagnosis is the first and most important step toward effective treatment.
