Building on the momentum of the seminar titled โ€œImportance of Public Health Research: Quest for Greater Development,โ€ jointly organized by the Department of Public Health, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), and HOPE Foundation for Women and Children of Bangladesh in Coxโ€™s Bazar on 10 August 2026, the two institutions have taken another step toward strengthening their academic and professional partnership.
As a continuation of this engagement, Dr. Iftikher Mahmood, Founder and President of HOPE Foundation for Women and Children of Bangladesh, and Dr. Aftab Uddin, Country Director of HOPE Foundation, visited Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) and participated in an informal meeting hosted by the Department of Public Health, IUB.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Kamran ul Baset, Associate Professor and Dean, School of Pharmacy and Public Health; Dr. Zenat Zebin Hossain, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health; and other faculty members of the Department of Public Health. The discussion focused on advancing the relationship initiated through the earlier joint engagement and exploring avenues for a more structured institutional collaboration. Particular emphasis was placed on the possibility of developing a strong Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IUB and HOPE Foundation to facilitate long-term cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Both sides also explored potential opportunities for collaborative research, joint projects, academic and professional engagement, and evidence generation in public health. The discussion highlighted the potential of HOPE Hospital and HOPE Foundationโ€™s community-based programmes as important platforms for developing relevant research initiatives and publications, identifying public health priorities, and undertaking collaborative projects with practical implications for healthcare and community well-being.

This meeting reflects the commitment of IUB to bridge academia, research, and healthcare practice. Through future collaborative research, projects, and institutional partnerships, IUB looks forward to strengthening the contribution to evidence-based public health practice and improving health outcomes in underserved population in Bangladesh.

The Department of Public Health of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a seminar titled โ€œImportance of Public Health Research for Medical Professionals: Quest for Greater Developmentโ€ on August 11, 2026, at Coxโ€™s Bazar Medical College.

The seminar discussed the role of public health research in medical practice and evidence-based healthcare through a keynote presentation and open discussion involving medical professionals, academics, healthcare leaders, and public health experts.

Dr. Zenat Zebin Hossain, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Public Health, IUB, delivered the welcome remarks and discussed the need for research engagement among medical professionals and the connection between clinical practice and public health research.

Dr. Bilkis Banu, Associate Professor of Public Health at IUB, delivered the keynote speech on the role of research evidence in understanding health challenges, informing healthcare practices, and addressing population health and development. An open discussion followed the keynote presentation, focusing on public health research and its relevance to medical practice.

Dr. Asma Chowdhury attended as a Special Guest. Dr. Aftab Uddin, Country Director, HOPE Foundation, delivered a Special Guest Address. Honorable Additional Secretary Eng. Jashim Uddin, Chairman, CUK, attended as the Guest of Honor. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mozibul Hoque, Principal, Coxโ€™s Bazar Medical College, attended as the Chief Guest.

Dr. Kamran ul Baset, PhD, Dean of IUBโ€™s School of Pharmacy and Public Health, attended as the Guest of Honor. Dr. Maung Ting Neo, Superintendent, 250 Bed District Sadar (Medical College) Hospital, Coxโ€™s Bazar, chaired the session and spoke on the role of research and evidence in healthcare practice.

The Department of Public Health of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), in collaboration with HOPE Foundation, organized a seminar titled โ€œImportance of Public Health Research: Quest for Greater Developmentโ€ on August 10, 2026, at HOPE Foundation, Coxโ€™s Bazar.

The seminar discussed the role of public health research in addressing public health challenges, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and contributing to development through academic and healthcare collaboration.

Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Lecturer of Public Health at IUB, delivered the welcome remarks. Dr. Bilkis Banu, Associate Professor of Public Health, delivered a keynote address on public health research, evidence-based decision-making, and development. Shahidul Haque, MPH, Senior Manager โ€“ MIS & Quality Control, HOPE Foundation, delivered a second keynote address on research from an organizational and practice perspective.

The keynote addresses were followed by an open discussion on the opportunities and challenges related to public health research. Dr. Nrinmoy Biswas, Senior Consultant at HOPE Hospital, addressed the seminar on clinical practice and the work of HOPE Foundation. Dr. Zenat Zebin Hossain, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Public Health at IUB, spoke on research capacity and collaboration between academic and healthcare institutions.

Dr. Kamran ul Baset, Dean of IUBโ€™s School of Pharmacy and Public Health, chaired the session. He highlighted research-based approaches to public health challenges. Dr. Aftab Uddin, Country Director, HOPE Foundation, delivered the closing remarks. The seminar was moderated by Dr. Golam Hafiz, Senior Manager, HOPE Foundation.

The Department of Public Health (DPH) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), NGO Platform (NGOP), Coxโ€™s Bazar, and HOPE Foundation for Women and Children of Bangladesh, organized a seminar on August 10, 2026, at the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Conference Room, Coxโ€™s Bazar.

Titled โ€œImportance of Public Health Research: Quest for Greater Developmentโ€, the seminar discussed the role of public health research in addressing health challenges and informing development initiatives through academic, government, NGO, and humanitarian sector engagement.

Dr. Zenat Zebin Hossain, Assistant Professor and Head of DPH, delivered the welcome address and outlined the seminarโ€™s objectives. Ms. Corinne Bali, Interim Coordinator, NGOP Coxโ€™s Bazar, also addressed the participants.

Dr. Bilkis Banu, PhD, Associate Professor of Public Health at IUB, delivered the keynote address on the role of public health research in generating evidence, identifying community needs, informing interventions, and supporting decision-making. An open discussion and question-and-answer session followed the keynote presentation, facilitated by Sukarna Abdullah, Co-coordinator, NGOP, on the application and scope of research in humanitarian health settings.

Mr. Nazmul Islam Bhuiyan, Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (ARRRC), Coxโ€™s Bazar, attended the seminar as Chief Guest. Eng. Jashim Uddin, Additional Secretary and Chairman, CUK, attended as Guest of Honor. Dr. Abu Toha Md. Rizuanul Haque Bhuiyan, Health Coordinator, Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, Coxโ€™s Bazar, and Dr. Aftab Uddin, Country Director, HOPE Foundation, attended as special guests.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Kamran ul Baset, PhD, Dean of IUBโ€™s School of Pharmacy and Public Health. Dr. Baset highlighted the role of collaboration among universities, government institutions, NGOs, and public health practitioners in applying research findings to population health interventions. We are deeply mourn to hear about the sudden passing of Dr. Khairul Islam, the Regional Director of WaterAid South Asia.

A dedicated visionary, he previously guided WaterAid Bangladesh for over a decade, championing climate-resilient water and sanitation solutions for vulnerable communities.

Beyond his field leadership, Dr. Islam also inspired future public health professionals as an external advisor and committee member at IUBโ€™s Department of Public Health.

His immense contributions to the development sector have touched countless lives across the region.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues; may his soul rest in peace.

IUB Faculty Member Represents Bangladesh at International Conference in Japan.

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) proudly congratulates Dr. Bilkis Banu, Associate Professor, Department of Public Health, and the MPH students on their participation in the 12th International Conference for Women in Science without Borders at Hiroshima University, Japan, on July 18 to 20, 2026.

As an invited speaker, Dr. Banu delivered a talk on "Healthcare in the Digital Age: Empowering Patient Self-Management through mHealth Innovations" and presented her research on men's knowledge of women's menopause in urban Bangladesh.
Three IUB MPH students (Marzana Hossain, Ami Das, and Isfat Jahan Bristi) also presented their research at the conference.
During the visit, Dr. Banu held collaboration meetings with the Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, Japan, to strengthen future academic and research partnerships.
