Bangladesh’s rice import bill may be heading higher.

Bangladesh is projected to import 1.6 million tonnes of rice in the 2026–27 marketing year—a 14.3% increase from the previous year, according to a USDA report cited by Daily Sun.

The projected increase comes amid reported losses in the Aus and Aman rice crops, widening the gap between domestic production and demand.

Bangladesh needs to look beyond managing shortages after they occur—and invest more strategically in resilient, productive and climate-smart agriculture.

Bangladesh has 18 agriculture-sector organisations but lacks an integrated institutional and data architecture that makes their mandates, projects, budgets, research portfolios and outcomes interoperable. Rather than abolishing institutions, Bangladesh could digitally integrate all 18, map every project and budget, identify duplication automatically, and make future agricultural investment decisions through an AI-assisted evidence system—with humans retaining final authority.

In the windswept fields of Koyra Upazila, a coastal district in Bangladesh, vegetable farmers have long endured the challenges of cyclones, salty soils, and insect infestations. Eggplant farmers have been particularly hard-hit by the fruit and shoot borer, an insect that burrows deep into the eggplant and renders pesticides ineffective, leading to the loss of up to 80% of their produce.

The erratic climate has only compounded these difficulties, making it increasingly challenging for farmers to sustain their livelihoods and provide for the district’s nearly 200,000 residents.

The FAO Food Price Index rose to 133.3 points in August, its highest level since November 2022. Prices of cereals, vegetable oils, sugar, meat and dairy all increased. Global cereal production forecasts for 2026 have also been revised downward to 2.98 billion tonnes, about 2% below 2025.

The drivers are increasingly interconnected: extreme heat and drought, geopolitical conflicts, disrupted trade routes, fertiliser supply risks and the growing threat of El Niño.

This is a reminder that food security cannot depend on production alone. We need more productive and climate-resilient crops, stronger agricultural research, secure input supply chains, open and predictable trade, and faster adoption of science-based innovations.

Pakistan Moves Toward GM Maize Cultivation.

Pakistan has decided in principle to allow genetically modified maize alongside existing hybrid and organic farming, with necessary safeguards in place.

The process is expected to include safeguards, transition measures and stakeholder consultation.

For South Asia, this is an important development.

Agriculture faces growing pressure from climate change, rising production costs, pests and the need to produce more with fewer resources. Farmers need access to every safe and scientifically validated technology that can help meet these challenges.

GM technology is not a silver bullet—and it should not be treated as one. But neither should it be dismissed because of ideology.
The priority should be clear: science-based regulation, strong biosafety systems, farmer choice, transparent evidence and access to better agricultural technologies.

As our neighbours move forward, Bangladesh should continue to build its own capacity for evidence-based agricultural biotechnology policy and innovation.

If we lose our soil, we undermine our food security.

A new FAO assessment delivers a serious warning: 52.5% of assessed regions and subregions have poor or very poor soil management, while soil degradation continues to worsen in many parts of the world.

For agriculture, this means declining productivity, greater pressure on farmers and increasing vulnerability to drought, floods and climate variability. But this is not a reason to romanticise the past or reject modern agriculture. It is a reason to make agriculture smarter, more scientific and more sustainable.

Better nutrient management, improved crop varieties, precision agriculture, conservation practices, soil testing, efficient water use and new agricultural technologies can all contribute to protecting and rebuilding productive soils.

The latest fertiliser crisis should make us look beyond the immediate question of prices.

According to The Daily Star, Bangladesh currently has around 13.65 lakh tonnes of fertiliser in stock against July–September demand of 13.21 lakh tonnes. Yet farmers across several districts are reportedly struggling to obtain fertiliser from designated dealers and are being forced into the open market, where prices are Tk 300–350 higher per 50kg bag. সুগন্ধি চালের কৃত্রিম সংকট, রপ্তানিতে কড়াকড়ি।

এই বছর দেশে ৪৫,২৭০ টন সুগন্ধি চাল রপ্তানির অনুমোদন দেওয়া হয়েছে।
কিন্তু একই সময়ে বাজারে সুগন্ধি চালের দাম বাড়া নিয়ে গুরুতর অভিযোগ উঠেছে। ব্যবসায়ীদের পক্ষ থেকে বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়কে বলা হয়েছে, দেশের শীর্ষ ১০টি বড় মিলমালিকের কাছে বিপুল পরিমাণ সুগন্ধি চাল মজুত রয়েছে।

প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী চাল বাজারে না ছেড়ে কৃত্রিম সংকট তৈরি করে দাম বাড়ানো হচ্ছে—এমন অভিযোগও রয়েছে।

রপ্তানি কৃষকের জন্য নতুন বাজার ও ভালো দাম তৈরির সুযোগ। তবে রপ্তানির পাশাপাশি দেশের বাজারে পর্যাপ্ত সরবরাহ, ন্যায্য মূল্য এবং মজুতের স্বচ্ছতা নিশ্চিত করাও জরুরি।

Farmers across Bangladesh are reportedly facing shortages of TSP and DAP fertiliser during the crucial Aman season, while fertiliser is being sold at higher prices in the open market. Timely access to fertiliser is essential to protect yields, farmer incomes and food security.

আমন মৌসুমে দেশের বিভিন্ন এলাকায় কৃষকরা TSP ও DAP সার সংকটে পড়েছেন। সরকারি দামে সার না পেয়ে অনেকেই বেশি দামে খোলা বাজার থেকে কিনতে বাধ্য হচ্ছেন। সময়মতো সার না পেলে উৎপাদন খরচ বাড়ার পাশাপাশি ফলনও কমতে পারে—যার প্রভাব পড়বে কৃষকের আয় ও দেশের খাদ্যনিরাপত্তায়।
